"Derrick arrived on time to assess the deck. He was very professional, personable, and accommodating. Our deck was in tough shape but he worked with us to stay within our budget and still not cut any corners. We were more than pleased with his work and being very punctual ."

"Anderson and his crew were very meticulous with great attention to detail. The exterior staining was a difficult project as my home had not been stained in many years and many shingles had to be replaced. His shingling crew did a fantastic job and the house looks awesome. Anderson checked on the work almost daily and he made sure that we were happy with the results. My husband and I would highly recommend Anderson and Sons Painting for any home project."

Customers say: Quick response

"All team members (3-5 per day) were on time, respectful of my property, did excellent work, and the cleanup was exactly what I expected. The price was somewhat higher than other companies, but it was important to me to have the work done reasonably quickly, so the team approach was definitely worth it. The owner was actively involved and very willing to help me with advice on color choices and other smaller repair issues. I was so pleased with the company and level of service that I also contracted for hardwood floor refinishing, and have referred two sisters and several friends to Cape Cod Fine Finishes for their painting needs."

Small jobs welcome

"Hired many painting and carpentry contractors over decades for exterior painting/deck and siding repair and deck staining and no one as performed better than Vinny and Giscelle. Why? Fair quote beating any competition on price and work detail and then in performance, executing daily on time as promised in the contract, communicating as needed on any new items arising. Excellent quality in carpentry repairs, painting prep and within the lines neat painting. Would recommend them to family and friends without hesitation. Pleasant professional people. M &D"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.

Ipe wood can last up to 75 years with minimal maintenance because its own oils help to preserve it. However, to get the most out of your Ipe wood deck, you should perform some routine maintenance, including regular cleaning, sweeping of leaves and debris, and rinsing spills with a hose. It’s also important to repair any deep scratches as soon as you spot them and reseal the deck annually to protect against scratches and scuffs.

The best way to protect a deck is to prevent damage from UV light, water, mold, mildew, insects, and abrasive cleaning methods. Sweep regularly to prevent debris that hides bugs and traps moisture that can result in mold or mildew growth. Use a deck cleaner once a year to remove algae, mold, and mildew. Avoid using pressure washers on high, as they can damage the wood. Applying a deck sealant can protect the wood from UV and water damage, and adding shade can also reduce sunlight damage.

The best paint for an older deck depends on the material and whether or not your deck already has a coat of paint. Generally, if your deck already has paint on it, you should choose the same type of paint when repainting the deck. For example, if an old deck has oil-based paint on it, stick with oil; if your deck has water-based paint, choose water-based paint.
