"Derrick arrived on time to assess the deck. He was very professional, personable, and accommodating. Our deck was in tough shape but he worked with us to stay within our budget and still not cut any corners. We were more than pleased with his work and being very punctual ."

Small jobs welcome

"I found Als Painting in Plymouth MA on Homeadvisor.com and was immediately impressed with the amount of positive reviews. Al was one of 3 quotes I received to do my home, deck and a few other small items. His pricing was competitive, he was funny, on time, a nice person and very honest. Although it was his busy time he actually completed my project ahead of schedule and for exactly what he quoted w/ no surprises at all. Al was very concerned with my satisfaction so we did a detailed walk around before the left. My home and deck look brand-new again and I would highly recommend Al"

"Mike and his team are 95% complete on roofing, trim and siding, porch and deck rebuild, paint and carpentry at my 200 year old Cape house. So far, 5 stars for fast service and quality of work! The change has been transformational and even with some additions to the contract for hidden roof and beam rot the change orders have stayed within 10 percent of the estimate. I would definitely hire them again."

Customers say: Quality work

"We hired universal Painting for a number of projects at our house - power washing, exterior painting, replacement of rotted wood, deck staining, interior painting and some dry walling. They also installed new doors and did bathroom tile work as well as beautiful exterior stone work. Andre and his crew are professional, timely, meticulous and easy to deal with. Their work is fantastic. I highly recommend Universal Painting."

"We Absolutely recommend VGK painting company! Vinny and Gisella were honest, and had great communication skills, they kept us updated throughout the whole process. Vinnie is a skilled painter and he saved our second floor windows by replacing the rotted sills. Our home was severely faded on the South side and the stain was peeling on the East sides. He sanded and primed the problem areas, applied 2 coats of premium solid stain bringing the appearance back to like new! The work on the trim included painting the shutters, replacing the worn downspouts and painting the faded ones. We are delighted with the result, many neighbors have commented on how nice the house looks! Support local businesses! Thanks for a great job!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Yes, it is generally a very good idea to seal your deck after pressure washing. Power washing removes not only dirt and debris but also a thin layer of wood, leaving the surface exposed and more susceptible to weathering. Sealing is almost always needed after this process. After a general cleaning, sealing isn't automatically necessary if the existing sealant is still intact. You can test the surface by placing a few drops of water on it. If the water beads up, the sealant is working. If it soaks into the wood, it's time to apply a new sealant. If it has been a few years, it's wise to remove the old sealant, wash the deck, and reseal for maximum protection.

The longevity of paint on wood depends on factors like the quality of the paint, surface preparation, exposure to elements, and maintenance. Exterior paint on wood surfaces can last 5 to 15 years or more with proper care and maintenance. Interior paint tends to have a longer life span, often 10 years or more. Regular cleaning, touch-ups, and addressing any issues like peeling or cracking can extend the life of the paint.

The need for a topcoat on a painted deck depends on various factors, primarily the type of paint used and your desired level of protection. Many premium deck paint formulations are self-sealing, eliminating the necessity for an additional topcoat. These paints often have built-in additives that substantially protect against moisture, UV rays, and everyday wear and tear.

The general consensus is that two coats of stain are required and since the cedar is siding, a third coat of sealant is always a good idea. This helps protect the wood and stain, so you won’t need to resand and restain for at least a decade. Each stain after the first will darken the wood, so be aware of that when choosing a colored stain.

Various kinds of substances and deck preservatives act as protective coatings for wood to prevent rot, which is caused by water getting into the wood and creating cracks and splits. Stains, paints, and sealants are the three best options to protect your wood, but there are also oils, varnishes, and waxes available. You’ll need to reapply sealant at least once per year, and you should inspect your wood deck regularly to look for signs of damage or general wear and tear.
