"John gave me an estimate over the summer after letting me know his schedule wasn't open until fall. After looking at the sagging plaster ceilings in our 1920s house, he recommended covering with drywall, and he did the work in December. John and his colleague did two ceilings in 4 days (about 700 square feet total) and they are a huge improvement. We're already planning to hire him again!"

"NE plastering restored my kitchen ceiling with a beautiful plaster ceiling. A pipe freeze destroyed the old ceiling, and I am extremely happy with Mr. Hernandez' work. There was further damage in the upstairs bath and now the new plaster walls are smooth and ready for paint and paper. I highly recommend this expert plasterer. Gérald Crôteau"

"We needed a big ceiling repair. Since we have worked with Atmosphere painting and plastering so many times and liked his work. We had him do this one, too. We needed to patch a 2x3 whole and do the popcorn on it. As usual, great communication, quick and clean and professional. Reasonable charge."

"Mario did a fantastic job painting our new nursery - walls, trim and ceiling. After having a cancellation with another service provider earlier in the week, we contacted Mario and he came out next day to assess and quote the room. Two days later he was here to do the work - on time and on the budget we discussed. He came prepared with all of his equipment, showed us the paint color to confirm before he started and got right to work and finished in half a day! He was extremely personable and professional and we would highly recommend him for any job. We hope to work with Mario again the future!"

"I called Said to get an estimate to paint our entire house, including walls, trim, ceiling and doors, for a 1400 square foot house. This included a kitchen, dining room, living room, hallway, three bedrooms (one with wallpaper that needed to be removed), and a bathroom. It also including patching our old walls and fixing an ice dam in our bathroom which affected our ceiling and door frame. I also wanted them to come during a specific week while we were on vacation, which was only three weeks away.
Said came and gave me an estimate, which was lower than the other two estimates I received. I was immediately impressed with Said's knowledge and experience and I felt I had a better understanding of all the work that needed to be done. Our house was not just a simple paint job, which is what I thought, and what the other painters quoted me on, rather there was a lot of wall patching work that needed to occur to make the finished product look better. The other contractors didn't focus on that part, and their estimate didn't include that either.
I hired Bay State and they came and painted our house while we were gone for the week. I trusted them with our house and our key based on all the good reviews, and we were certainly not let down. Our house looks fantastic. All the walls throughout the house which were previously bumpy, are now nice and smooth, and the paint looks really fantastic. I really feel like we live in a brand new house, and everybody who enters says the same. I also want to add that we have a ton of stuff in our small house (we are not minimalists :)) and somehow they were able to work around our stuff, feed our fish, and leave the house spotless.
The best part is Said is super nice and friendly, but truly honest and a hard-working professional.
I would definitely hire them again and would recommend them highly!

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

In most cases, it is worth removing popcorn ceilings because they are considered outdated and can make a home more difficult to sell. Buyers typically prefer a smooth, modern finish, so removing the texture can increase a home's value and appeal. The necessity can sometimes depend on the housing market; in a competitive market, buyers may be more willing to overlook minor renovations. The most critical factor is the potential presence of asbestos, which is common in older popcorn ceilings and poses a significant health hazard if the material deteriorates. If you know your ceiling contains asbestos, you are required to disclose this when selling, which can be a major deterrent for buyers. In this situation, it is highly recommended to have a professional remove or encapsulate the ceiling to resolve the issue before it impacts the sale.

Popcorn ceilings can be relatively easy to keep clean with regular maintenance. Avoid exposing it to smoke if possible—popcorn ceilings tend to collect stains from smoke, including those from cigarettes or cooking. With proper care, you can clean your popcorn ceiling anywhere from every six months to a year—or as needed.

Professionals handle heavy lifting, proper disposal, and recycling, reducing environmental impact.

While you should consult with a ceiling professional for larger cracks, especially if you’re not sure what’s causing your ceiling to crack, you can certainly try to repair small cracks on your own. If you’re up for the task, here’s how to repair ceiling cracks for $150 or less.

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”
