"I received excuse after excuse as to why the job was not started (i.e. his truck broke down, his trainer axle broke, his welder was hospitalized, etc.) When he did finally start (4 days late) he showed up with an excavator at 9:30 AM to remove a 14'x 12' patch of grass. He worked 20 minutes and left. Rain started. He returned with a load of "dirt" (heavy or "fat" clay) which was tracked through the property that was wet from rainfall. We instructed him that we did NOT want clay like he had just dumped. He left 25 minutes later. 2 hours later(2:00 PM) he returned. It was raining, but he dumped another load of clay onto the job site and began rolling over it with the excavator. The rain poured down, he continued to roll up and down over the clay, trying to pack it down. All the while, making a swamp on the property. 4 days later at 10:30 AM he dropped of rebar and wire mesh and left. At 6:42 PM he returned with a load of dirt. Spread it and left 25 minutes later. This type of on and off work continued for 2 full weeks. Then after concrete was finally poured, he failed to put in all anchor bolts, and those he did put in were so far from the edge that they didn't fall in line with the base plate. Four days after he was supposed to return to remove the form, we had not heard from him so we had to get someone else to complete the job so the building contractor could finally start. This was the worst construction job I have ever seen. I recommend this company to no one. He talks a good talk, but honestly does not know how to perform. In the beginning this was going to take 2 days, starting on a Monday (Aug 6th) and building could begin on Friday (Aug 10). There were some rain days, but those were all after the proposed start and finish dates."

Foundation Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can fill cracks in concrete if you’re a somewhat handy homeowner. It’s important to know which concrete patching method to use, as small cracks require different approaches than large ones. It might seem challenging to determine which product to use and the tools necessary for the project, but with a bit of background, homeowners can restore their cracked concrete easily.

No, hairline cracks in concrete are generally not a problem as they do not impact the strength and longevity of the concrete. Generally, cracks less than 0.3 millimeter wide don’t impact the structure. Hairline cracks can grow over time and weaken the structure, such as in a home foundation. Some hairline cracks can also cause leaks in a foundation. It’s important to watch the cracks to see if they grow. Contact a concrete contractor if you notice cracks exceeding 0.3 millimeter wide.

You can seal a concrete slab by cleaning the surface, filling in any cracks, etching the surface, applying a sealer, and letting it dry. Concrete slabs don't typically need sealing, but you can use a topical concrete sealer if you notice signs of water damage. If you haven't already fixed the cause of the leak, then you'll want to repair the plumbing before you seal a concrete slab.

Foundation settling is normal and expected if just a small amount of settlement occurs within a year or so after construction. This usually results in hairline cracks in the foundation, which aren’t typically a problem. If settlement occurs years after construction, unevenly under your home, or results in signs of structural damage, then it could be very serious. Foundation stabilization and drainage system installation to fix unnatural settlement can cost tens of thousands of dollars and compromise the structural integrity of your entire home.

Cracks, spalling, uneven surfaces, and weather damage often necessitate professional repair or resurfacing.
