"Mr. Walter and his crew did a wonderful job painting a bonus room addition in my home. The room has several different surface materials including drywall, paneling, posts, trim, and acoustical tile. The room looks fabulous and is now my favorite room in the house. They also face painted bathroom cabinets and did an excellent job in there as well. I highly recommend Mr. Walter! I would hire him again in a heartbeat."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Like many other repair projects, the cost to fix a behind-the-wall shower leak depends on several factors. The cost of your repair may depend on the type of leak (from a clog or burst pipe), type of piping, and location of the leak. The extent of the issue and how difficult it is to access the pipes can greatly impact and increase your price. On average, you can expect to pay around $150 to $600 to repair a leaking shower.

Yes, you can install drywall over plaster, but there are important factors to consider. While it can create a smooth, flat surface, it is often not the best approach. Installing drywall over plaster will increase the wall's thickness, which can cause issues with existing window and door frames that may no longer fit. You might also need to adjust power outlets to keep them accessible. A better, though more expensive, option is to remove the old plaster and lath entirely before installing new drywall. Drywalling directly over plaster seals in the old material, and if any problems arise later, you will need to remove both layers down to the structural beams for repairs. Given the potential complications, this job is best handled by professionals.

Depending on how much adhesive was used as well as the strength of the adhesive, you may have some drywall damage when removing a mirror. You can typically repair most drywall damage if it’s small by sanding the damaged area, applying spackle to smooth the damaged section so it’s flush with the rest of the wall, and repainting the area.

You can skim coat plaster, but it’s better to repair the plaster itself. A skim coat is a thin coat of drywall joint compound spread over the surface of a wall. The result is a flat finish that looks pleasing, but part of the appeal of plaster is its imperfections and aesthetic. Skim coating is best when limited to drywall applications.

Wondering who to call for ceiling repair? While you can hire a handyperson to fix minor cracks, you’ll want to hire a drywall professional for larger issues. Depending on the cause of the crack, you may need to hire other contractors, such as a foundation contractor, mold remediation company, roofer, or plumber near you.
