"The owner Marcio and his crew did a fantastic job with my roof. Marcio did a great job with keeping me informed with the progress, and the final result was great. Grasso Construction will be the first company I call for needed construction work."

"Malcolm and his crew were professional and did a great job. He actually came back to finish a small portion of the job (I have learned most don't, sadly). He is honest, helpful and diligent. You just don't find this very often. I love my windows, my shutters look fabulous; I've gotten messages left in my mailbox asking me where I got them. We're planning to use him again this year and look forward to it."

"Alex and his team were very professional. His people are excellent craftsmen at what they do. Kept us informed throughout the process. They cleaned up after themselves and made sure to do final cleaning before they left. We intend on using them again at a later date. With out a doubt we would 100% recommend them. 1st class company!"

"I hired Castillo Construction to do emergency repairs to my home after my neighbor's tree fell on it and caused major damage to the house and completely destroyed my garage. Unfortunately, this was the second time that the same tree had fallen on my house causing major damage. The first time, about half of the tree fell and my whole house was gutted. My first contractor was a crook and wasn't even finished with the renovations a year later when the rest of the tree fell. Having had such a horrible experience with my first contractor, I was very picky about who I would hire for this round of renovations and repairs. Alfonso and his team were very responsive with my inquiries for a site visit, estimate, and references. He was also understanding of the trouble I had been through over the last year and was willing to jump through all the hoops I put up to make sure that he was an honest contractor who wasn't trying to make a quick buck without doing the work. As soon as my insurance company issued the first check, his crew got to work. They replaced my roof, laid new wood floors throughout the entire house, repaired the ceiling in two rooms where the tree had come through, painted the interior rooms that had been damaged, rebuilt damaged kitchen cabinet, demolished and rebuilt the two-car garage and patio roof, upgrade electrical box to garage, repainted the exterior of the house, installed new gutters and downspouts, and replaced air conditioning compressor. I'm probably forgetting so many details about what was done. I'll just say that it was a lot of work and they completed it quickly and beautifully. My former contractor had left several things inside the house unfinished such as no window sills on several windows and tile missing in the bathroom or incorrectly installed. I was going to have to pay out of pocket to get these things taken care of since I was fighting with my old contractor over what he owed me. When I asked Alfonso for an estimate to complete this work while they were doing all the other repairs, he told me not to worry about it. He finished all of the unfinished items in the house without asking for a dime. It wasn't a lot of work but he sympathized with my situation he saved me several hundred dollars instead of taking advantage. His crews were always extremely polite and answered any questions I had about what they were doing. They also kept a very clean work site, making sure that all materials and tools were put away and organized every day before they left for the day. Even when Alfonso and I had a disagreement about the air compressor that was installed, he was willing to bend to what I wanted, and what had originally been agreed upon, at a financial loss to himself in order to make things right with the customer. After having been through the ringer over the last year and a half, it was refreshing to have a contractor who was honest and didn't try to take advantage of a woman navigating in a largely male-dominated field."

"Excellent job, very pleased with all aspects of the work. Rigoberto returned my call requesting an estimate to do the work within a couple of hours and showed up right on schedule to provide a bid. He began the work when promised and completed the job a day before my expectation. The quality of the work is very good and he was able to match the existing texture very well. He and his crew are conscientious about cleaning up at the end of the day, though drywall work is messy. I would certainly use him again without hesitation.

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Professionals charge between $60 and $95 per hour to install ornamental porch columns. The amount of time they need varies based on the condition of the porch, whether they need to remove old columns, and if there is any damage to your porch's structure. This cost can increase if more issues come up during the installation process.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

Converting a carport into a garage can vary in difficulty depending on its configuration, the condition of the foundation or slab, and its location relative to the house. The process has a lot in common with a home addition, but you can often skip non-essential finishes like fine flooring, trim work, or even drywall and HVAC. The conversion requires experience with drywall, insulation, and other building materials to ensure it’s done safely and correctly. While it might be possible for a DIYer with the proper tools and skills to do the work, it is a complicated and potentially dangerous job. If you’re new to basic construction, it's best to leave this project to the professionals.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.
