"My house is a 4-story townhouse in the inner loop.

The small windows on the 4th level were too difficult to get to, so I asked that only windows on the first three levels be washed.

Their men did a good job, using ladders to get to each window and hand wash each one. Some were difficult to reach so the work took most of the day.

They were very cooperative about doing other "handyman" work while they had the ladders there, and this work was priced out separately.

I was very satisfied with the work and they were eager to do a good job."

"Troy was very responsive to the call and came very quickly to give me an estimate. He talked me into additional services (gutters and front driveway). He sent a worker over to perform the work (I was away). Overall it was a good job. Nearly all the backyard and the side yard were clean. The front gutter looked good as well but there was a strip of the back yard that looked like they missed it, and the back yard gutter looked the same as before they had come. I spoke with Troy and he assured me that the workers had, in fact, cleaned the back gutter. He said he could come himself and redo the back yard strip but talked about how long it would take him to drive here and to set up so I finally just said, forget it. It didn't seem to be quite the level of service he advertised, but I probably would hire him again to do just the backyard.

Sandblasting Services questions, answered by experts

The best way to sand a deck is by cleaning it, sanding the boards and stairs with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, and sanding the railings and posts with 80-grit sandpaper. You should sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the timber. When sanding your deck, use medium pressure and aim for an even sand. Pressing too hard with a sander can damage decks, as most are softwoods.

Sanding and pressure washing serve different purposes in deck maintenance, so one is not necessarily better than the other. Pressure washing is ideal for annual cleaning to remove dirt, grime, mold, and mildew. Sanding is a deeper restoration method used to smooth rough surfaces, remove an old finish, and prepare the wood for a new coat of stain or paint. The ideal process for refinishing a deck is to first clean it (with a power washer), then sand it, and finally apply the new stain or finish. While cleaning should be done annually, sanding and staining are typically needed only every one to three years.

Sandblasting is useful when you need to strip material off a hard surface. Common reasons to sandblast are to remove paint, rust, or get a surface ready for a new material. You aren’t limited to surfaces like walls either—you can sandblast rusted tools, bicycle frames, cement, bricks, and many others. If what you’re sandblasting is still structurally sound, sandblasting can be a fast and inexpensive way to revive the original material.

The disadvantages of sandblasting are noise, mess, and risk. Sandblasters are louder than chainsaws and spread debris on the ground and through the air. Let your neighbors know that you're sandblasting so they can prepare. Sandblasting can damage your property if not done properly, so thoroughly vet any pros you talk to before hiring.

If you’re DIYing the project, it could take up to a week if you aren’t able to dedicate full-time hours. If you hire a professional and they arrive with a team, expect your stairs to be sanded in as little as 2 hours (for simple projects). Finishing the stairs takes a while longer as there are drying and sealing times to consider, but the actual work will take much less time than the sanding portion.
