Eliminating mold from wood permanently poses a challenge as the mold spores have the ability to deeply penetrate the porous wood surface. While surface mold can be effectively eradicated with proper cleaning and preventative measures, it's difficult to guarantee its non-recurrence under favorable conditions. Determining if vermiculite contains asbestos requires professional testing. Visual inspection alone cannot confirm the presence of asbestos fibers, as these fibers are so small that they are not visible to the naked eye. A certified asbestos inspector will collect samples of the vermiculite insulation and send them to a laboratory for analysis. Microscopic examination using polarized light microscopy (PLM) or transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is necessary to accurately identify asbestos fibers. DIY sampling is strongly discouraged due to the potential health risks associated with asbestos exposure.

It can be challenging to know if mold is growing behind walls without knocking them down. If the walls show signs of water damage (discoloration, water stains, or peeling paint) or there’s a musty odor, it’s possible mold is growing. Know the difference between signs of water damage vs. termites because termite infestations are sometimes mistaken for water damage. A more subtle sign might be your own health: If you’re constantly not feeling well or are sneezing, scratching your eyes, or coughing when in a specific room, you could have mold.
