"I sign a contract with Zane since November 2024, and pay him 50% down payment. I live in Chicago sub, and we exchange email. He was very pleasant , and he told me he will do the landscape as we discussed. By February 11, my neighbors, and the president of HOH email to tell me that he has never showed up, and that the yard have grow in weed. I call Zane, and he said he will take care of it. He send me series of email that was reassuring to me that he will do the work right. On February 20th he text me that he have pinched a nerve in his neck, and shoulder, and will step away , and will not work on it. For 4 months, he took my money, and he said he will not return it. He have scammed me because I live far away, and did not know he was not working on my landscape. He said he is not returning my money back."

Stone and Gravel questions, answered by experts

The white stains you see on your bricks are likely efflorescence, which is salt and lime buildup. To remove efflorescence stains, simply brush them away with a stiff brush. For larger, more stubborn stains, scrub the stains with a water-detergent solution.

New constructions need time to “settle” and sometimes, small hairline cracks occur as a result. Larger horizontal or “stair step” cracks, however, are usually a sign of a deeper, more severe issue. It could indicate an issue with the soil beneath the home, a problem caused by an overgrown tree, or another problem.

Masonry work tends to be more expensive because the materials can be costly, such as natural stone and brick. Masonry is also very labor intensive, typically making up 50% or more of the final project cost. In addition, quality masonry work requires years of training and experience, as with any skilled trade.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Repointing brick is recommended every 25 to 30 years. Professional repointing can easily last this long if you're following all basic brick and stone maintenance tips. However, you may find that you need repointing more often if you live in an area that sees harsh weather or if the construction of your home was rushed. Additionally, if you DIY your brick repointing, you’re more likely to find that you need additional repointing more often, so every 10 to 15 years might be more appropriate.
