"Randy came out same day for an estimate and worked with my schedule to come cut down a large pine tree. The tree was very close to our house they took extra care and per-caution, the tree came down exactly where they had planned it. Very professional, punctual, and friendly. We will use and recommend them for any future work."

Small jobs welcome

"TDR did a wonderful job cleaning up and mowing my neglected yard in a very timely manner as well as giving me a quote before doing the work. I'm very happy I found & hired TDR, spoke with Stephen many times over the course of the job as well as receiving pictures of work and video when completed since I wasn't able to be there at my place. Highly recommend & hired Stephen to come back to keep yard under control in the future."

"Big Tex Tree Service was very responsive and quickly came out to provide an estimate. I thought the quoted price was fair for the amount of working being done, and they came out just a few days later and took care of everything. They were efficient and did a great job cleaning up. The crew was friendly and courteous. I would hire them again for my next tree service."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

The best way is to start controlling tree height long before it grows too large, via careful pruning through the years. But that’s not always possible. If a tree has become too high or too large, use selective pruning to remove the most troublesome branches, one by one, without topping the tree. Gently shaping a tree like this can, over time, correct problems. You can also find growth inhibitors to spray on a tree to stop it from growing too rapidly, but use these sparingly if at all.

You can use the formula mentioned earlier to calculate the depth of tree roots. Each inch of width of a tree trunk translates to six inches of depth within the root system. Large trees extend anywhere from 2 to 6 feet into the ground, with some magnificent specimens going even deeper.

For trimming trees, your best tool is a pair of pruning shears or loppers. Both options work best for branches that are under 3 inches in diameter. Trimming trees with a larger diameter may require a robust tool like a small chainsaw or a handsaw, so take into account your tree’s diameter when deciding between tools.

No, you cannot plant a tree above a gas line. Tree roots grow and spread over time and can sometimes dent, crack, or penetrate a gas line. Those same roots may also cause accessibility problems for maintenance or repairs. You can generally plant vegetation with non-invasive root systems, low-growing vegetation, and flower beds near gas lines.

Homeowners are usually not responsible for trees that fall on power lines. Power companies usually have utility easements around power lines, which give them the responsibility to maintain any trees within about 15 to 20 feet of the lines.
