"CNM did a great job replacing my former wooden deck with a Trex product. Cary was very conscientious, well organized and communicated well throughout my project as we made adjustments along the way. The new deck is beautiful, extremely well built and I have no doubt will last for many years."

Small jobs welcome

"Handymansfield, aka Bill Mansfield was very knowledgeable and professional. His knowledge of materials was very important for this project and his advice was spot on. My only observations, which as a woman unfortunately happens a lot, is that often my instructions are not followed or understood. I found metal scraps after the jobs was completed when I asked about clean up at the beginning of the project - which includes shards of metals that could become flying objects when mowing the yard. At over $2k in labor, I'd expect such clean up. We also could had communicated better as to moving topsoil bags away from the fence - which I could not do as I recently had spinal surgery and am under a no lifting doctor's order. I greatly appreciated his assistance in returning unused materials to the retailer - so despite any problems in communications, I highly recommend this contractor for any fencing project."

"Phil and his guys always do a great job. As a DIYer with a meticulous eye for detail, I am always reluctant to pay for jobs I can do myself. However, Phil is so detail oriented and reliable that I can relax and know that the project will come out great and I can sit back and relax! I have used Northshore painting for 5 different jobs and actually have him back again to work on improvements to the kitchen. This is a great local company and you won’t regret using them!"

"Hired Marco to demolish old tin shed that had been there for 30+ years and haul away all trash around building. He did a professional job. And also a very nice young fellow. I would hire him again in the future . I would recommend him to anyone that needs a job well done. Thanks Marco. I am very pleased!"

"First of all, I have never done a Google review. However, Felix and his crew are so outstanding that I feel I would be doing him a disservice not to write a five star review of his work. We waited for at least a month before Felix was able to send a crew, but folksâ comments here on Google convinced us that he was worth the wait. He was! Every member of his crew, from painter to carpenter, was courteous and efficient. All of them showed up on time and cleaned up after themselves. The work they did, from sanding and revarnishing to carpentry repairs and lattice work, was meticulous. Any oversight that I noticed, Felix quickly took care of (and I would rate us close to a 10 when it comes to perfectionism!). I will most definitely use Felix again, hopefully to paint interior rooms and repair sheetrock damage from water. Thank you, Felix. (It makes sense that the only low review of Diamond Painting is by someone who never used him. Should that even be allowed?)"

"We’ve custom-built and remodeled homes on five occasions and from that perspective I give SES a solid thumbs up. They recently completed a kitchen renovation on our apartment and we are very happy with the outcome and the price paid. Perry’s estimate was detailed and specific and allowed us to complete the project as scoped for the price quoted — a first for us. The project progressed at an acceptable pace and SES coordinated well with the subs we selected ourselves for cabinets and countertops. As is the case with all builders, there were a few glitches and some of their crew were more skilled than others. Their demo crew, cabinet installer and tile guy were first-rate, their paint guys OK and their floor guy and cleaners not very good. SES addressed concerns related to the latter two with redos and fee reductions, respectively. They inadvertently disposed of $300 worth of cabinet lighting they were supposed to reuse, but they immediately agreed to replace it at their expense. Similarly, I had asked them repeatedly to provide me with copies of receipts for parking so I could get these reimbursed by the insurance company (the project was necessitated by water damage caused by our upstairs neighbor) but they neglected to do so and as a result offered to not charge us for parking (which HAD been included as a line item in their bid). Owner Shawn was very personable and responsive, and office manager Ashley was a pleasure to deal with, keeping things moving along and ensuring punch list items and other requests were addressed in a timely fashion. Communication generally was excellent. There were no times when anyone became difficult to work with, another first for us. I would gladly use SES again and I recommend them without reservation."

"I'm a professional painter and noticed the excellent finish King Cole Construction LLC did for their costumers. I learned the owner is a graduate of the Rinker school of building construction and management at the University of Florida, pretty impressive! I finally met him on the job, and he is super guy to speak with, and really knows his profession!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Converting a carport into a garage can vary in difficulty depending on its configuration, the condition of the foundation or slab, and its location relative to the house. The process has a lot in common with a home addition, but you can often skip non-essential finishes like fine flooring, trim work, or even drywall and HVAC. The conversion requires experience with drywall, insulation, and other building materials to ensure it’s done safely and correctly. While it might be possible for a DIYer with the proper tools and skills to do the work, it is a complicated and potentially dangerous job. If you’re new to basic construction, it's best to leave this project to the professionals.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.
