Which way your garden gate opens mainly comes down to preference. While other types of gates, like one leading from the sidewalk to your property, should swing inward rather than outward to avoid opening into a public space, you don’t have to worry about such an issue in a backyard garden. A prehung door comes ready to install with the door already mounted in its frame, including hinges and stop molding. Everything is factory-aligned, which makes installation quicker and more precise. It’s a smart option if your current frame is damaged or uneven, or if you’re working with a new build. Instead of hanging a door slab from scratch, you fit the entire unit into the rough opening, shim it , level it, and secure it. Prehung doors are a clean, efficient way to install new doors without having to piece everything together yourself.

You can convert a pre-hung door into a Dutch door, but it’s more of a pain. Pre-hung doors are already set in the frame with the hinges and everything aligned, so once you cut the slab in half, you’ll likely need to adjust the hinge placement and maybe even mess with the frame itself. It’s doable, but expect some trial and error because it’s not a straight-swap situation.

As long as you do it carefully, you can sand and restain hollow core doors. However, it’s risky because the veneers on hollow core doors are so thin that sanding and restaining might cause damage to the doors. If you do move forward with this project, sand the doors lightly with a medium-grit sandpaper.
