These methods allow you to kill a stump using minimal machinery and physical exertion.

There are a few instances in which removing a tree is the best option. You might do this if the tree looks to be a major danger—potentially falling onto your home, your car, or other parts of your property—or it’s diseased beyond repair. A tree that is growing too close to your house might need to be removed to prevent mold growth.

While the fastest way to kill a tree is to simply cut it down, there are several other methods to choose from. Some slower but effective options include treating or grinding the tree stump or using a basal bark treatment. 

You should avoid cutting off the top of mature cherry trees. This process is called tree topping, and it’s not recommended for cherry trees—or any trees, for that matter. Tree topping removes between one-third to half of the length of the tree trunk, resulting in structurally unsound, fruitless suckers. The only exception is for saplings.
