"Young man arrived quickly to discuss small projects. He was such a delight speaking with him. Before all was done he repaired a light fixture, removed some broken bulbs, repaired and reinstalled a closet shelf and trimmed the hedges around the property. Would Definitely Recommend!!"

"Jay Nobles and an associate refinished a bathtub and a shower for me on 05 Aug 19. Most of the work was completed the first day with virtually no impact on other parts of the house. Jay and his partner returned the following day to complete the job (the finish had to dry overnight). I found a sag in the epoxy finish applied to the shower and mentioned it to them when they returned to complete the job and they quickly repaired it and recoated that area without issue. Both individuals were extremely professional and courteous as well as conscientious about limiting dust and odors associated with the job. The price charged was very reasonable and I highly recommend SPR Bathtub Refinishing."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.

In general, you need a footing at each corner of your deck, and within 8 feet of each other. So, how many you need depends on the size and shape of your deck, plus any local building codes. It also depends on factors like the load capacity of your soil and the weight of your deck. You can find a footing calculator online or contact a pro for support.

Before installing a new railing, check the condition of the deck frame and joists, especially around the perimeter where posts attach. If boards are loose, soft, or show signs of rot, the structure may need repair. A deck pro can inspect your framing to confirm it meets load-bearing requirements.

Deck stairs should have at least three stringers rather than two. The recommended minimum width for stairs is 36 inches, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors recommends at least three cut stringers to provide sufficient support on wood decking stairs of this width. Generally, stringers should be a maximum of 16 inches apart for wood decking and 12 inches apart for more flexible composite decking.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, particularly for small or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks don’t require digging or pouring. However, their use is regulated by local building codes, and they may not be permitted in areas prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes. Always consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.
