"We have an old 1930's house that needed a large chimney repointed and cap replaced. Rod at Layman Masonry and his team were referred to us by our roofer, Kelvin Howard, for doing good work. We contacted Rod for a quote, and he came out the very next day to quote a price that was good considering the amount of work to be done. Rob and his team are insured and were courteous and friendly throughout the project. They showed up on time and maintained a clean job site. The project consisted of grinding out and replacing the old mortar, a new chimney cap and to put two coats of paint back on the chimney. The project was completed in 4 days despite rain every other day. We were very happy with the work done and will use Rod again in the future."

"Owner did NOT inspect the job as promised upon completion of project. Upon this home owner checking the work done, liquid black creosote/soot had leaked out of the liner and was running down the rock wall inside and outside the building. Also found was standing water with large pieces of concrete crown debris inside inside the liner. I contacted the owner of the business, who finally came to see the problem, which he had written he would personally repair or replace any work done totally free of charge. So, yesterday, after viewing the damage, he said that he WOULD NOT do what he had promised. Instead, he would refund the labor cost only on the initial job. Then he said to go find somebody else to complete the job. Trust in the company?? NEVER again!!!"

I have been a chimney sweep for 27 years, am a registered contractor with Lexington/Fayette County, and carry one million dollars in liability insurance.

"Sweep assumed completed. Cap molding left on over winter and top screen was not reinstalled. Multiple attempts to contact went un answered, for months."

It is a bad idea to try to walk on a roof with snow on it. In fact, you should stay off your roof all year long, even when it is dry and sunny outside. There are too many things that can go wrong, and one misstep can cause serious injury or even death.

Rather, if you need to get something done on your roof, call in a pro. They have the right experience and know-how to get things done safely on a snowy roof, including snow removal.

Yes, moss can be dangerous for your roof if left in place to grow without treatment. The moss soaks up and holds moisture. Having a constantly damp roof could lead to problems with rot for the parts of the roof that consist of wood. Additionally, a patch of thick moss may draw insects and birds, which could damage the roof. Thick moss could block the roof’s drainage system. Water then may back up after a rainstorm and cause further damage that could eventually lead to roof repair expenses or the cost of roof replacement.

The best way to clean a roof without damaging it is to opt for soft washing, or better yet, leave it to a professional roof cleaner. Soft washing involves a biodegradable cleaning solution being sprayed on the roof and gently rinsed away after it dissolves built-up residue on your shingles.

It is not advisable to use salt on your roof to prevent or remove ice dams. It’s not only mostly ineffective but can also cause serious damage to your roof itself. Salt can rust metal, damage masonry, pit shingles, and cause runoff that’s damaging to plants and animals.

Regular inspections, cleaning gutters, and replacing broken tiles help extend its lifespan.
