We require half of monies up front with the rest upon completion of work. Larger and longer jobs may require draws, but will be discussed and written in contract. Moisture and rot are the largest threat to wooden fences. Stain can help your wood fence last 15 to 20 years, but only if you choose a stain with waterproofing qualities or add a sealant. Oil-based stains create a thicker moisture barrier than water-based stains, though both are mold and mildew resistant. Silt fences are very effective when installed correctly and used in proper locations. However, there are places where they don’t work as well. This includes property with a concentrated water flow, where runoff could pool or cause a flooding hazard. You’ll also want to use caution when installing in areas susceptible to landslides. Your contractor will follow state guidelines and know when an alternate solution is more effective.

Permit requirements for new fencing vary based on location. Typically, fences less than 6 feet tall in your backyard do not require a permit. Fences in the front yard usually have a lower height cap. There can also be exceptions if you live in a highly populated area or an area with mixed residential and commercial zones.

Pickets should sit at least 2 inches off the ground to encourage groundwater to flow underneath. Pickets can sit as much as 6 inches off the ground, but setting it any higher could let pets in or out of your yard unintentionally. These are not to be confused with the fence posts anchored underground with soil or concrete footing.

Deer can crawl under a fence if it has a gap of around 6 inches or more. Make sure to close all gaps at the bottom of your fence to keep deer out, and the bottom of the material should be tightly secured, or the deer will push right through it. As an added benefit, closing shorter gaps at the bottom of a fence can also keep rabbits out of your yard.
