In general, an HVAC filter should be replaced every 90 days. However, depending on the quality of your filter and the environment of your home, you may need to change it more or less often. It’s best to use the recommendation from your manufacturer as a general guideline. You can also occasionally check the condition of your filter (every month or so) to determine if it needs to be replaced.

As a rule, it’s best to replace your HVAC filters every three months. But in some cases, you may need to change your filters more frequently. For example, if you use thin filters (1 to 2 inches in depth), you may need to swap them out every month or two. If you smoke inside or often keep your windows open, aim to replace the filters once per month.

A correctly installed air filter will fit snugly in its compartment. One that’s too thick or big won’t lie smoothly, and it can block the airflow, sometimes resulting in strange noises. A filter that’s too small or improperly fitted may move around in the compartment, resulting in strange humming or vibration noises. Poor fitting can eventually cause a buildup of dirt in the HVAC ductwork, and reduced indoor air quality can lead to sneezing or excess dust on your surfaces.

Always turn off the power to your HVAC system before you remove the front cover to replace the air filter. If there isn’t an off switch, turn it off at the circuit breaker box. This prevents the risk of electric shock and stops unfiltered air from passing through the ductwork while the thermostat is running.

Air filters with a MERV rating of 11 or higher need to be changed every three to six months. If your filters are incredibly strained because of environmental factors, such as living in a smoggy, pollen-rich area with a large household, you may need to change your filters every two months regardless of the MERV rating.
