Customers say: True professional

"Kara and Kevin did a great job. They arrived on time and laid out a plan in advance of completion. Each day, our home was left in very good order. They painted my kitchen cabinets and they are just beautiful. They also brought suggestions that we had not thought about. Great experience, beautifully painted interior."

"Wow, I’d recommend this company without hesitation. I originally gathered a few paint contractor names from Angie’s List and friends and then got 4 estimates for several jobs around my house. I was impressed by the prompt and courteous response of Robin, Skip’s wife who runs the office. When we met to discuss the job, Skip himself was on time, knowledgeable and thorough (as are his written proposals - you know exactly each step that is taken - a good paint job is about 80% prep work!). His proposal came in a bit above mid-range of the 4; not the most expensive but I’ve learned you get what you pay for in painting. It was a no-brainer to hire him. He kept in good communication about start and end dates and followed through. In just over a day my horrid ceiling (water damage, peeling, buckling) looked brand new. I couldn’t believe it! Every job was done beautifully and I believe they may have left the site cleaner than they found it. It was the best painting experience I’ve had, start to finish."

"Santos, Kevin and the entire J & S team completed my project in one day and it looks amazing! My daughter purchased her first home (a one bedroom, one bath condo) and it desperately needed a facelift. J &S definitely took care of that for us. They painted her living/dining room; bedroom; bathroom; and kitchen (including ceilings and trim) in one day! They are truly amazing! If I ever need anything painted, I will contact them in a heartbeat. I will also recommend them to all of my family and friends who may need any kind of painting needs. If you have a project that needs painting, don’t hesitate to call J & S Painting. They are professional, kind, and prompt. They’re great!!!"

Preparation includes cleaning the fence, sanding any rough areas, applying a primer if necessary, and ensuring dry weather for application.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Rags used with oil-based stains are highly flammable and can spontaneously combust in the right conditions. To reduce the fire risk, throw them in a metal container after use and add rocks on top to secure them. Add an inch of water and seal the container. Take the rags in the container to a hazardous waste factory as soon as possible.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood, as this helps prevent the surface from cracking. However, it is crucial to wait for the wood to dry out completely from the chemical treatment process before applying a finish. If the wood is still wet, the paint will not adhere properly. The drying time can range from weeks to six months. To test if the wood is ready, drip some water onto a board. If the water is absorbed, the wood is dry enough for painting or staining. If the water beads up on the surface, it needs more time to dry. You can build with the wood while it's still wet, but you must wait for it to dry before painting.

For homes in areas with extreme weather, high heat, or intense sun exposure, high-quality acrylic paint is the best option. Acrylic paint is durable, resistant to both heat and cold, and provides a protective barrier with excellent UV resistance. For best results, look for acrylics that contain natural earth pigments, which are better suited for resisting sun damage. While oil-based paint is also durable, it can be prone to fading in high heat and can become too viscous to apply easily in cold temperatures. Additionally, choosing a neutral or light color like gray, beige, or white can help, as these colors absorb less heat than darker shades.
