"They did a great job excavating my hilly, eroding back yard. Now I will be able to mow the grass on it this spring. Before you could hardly even walk on it. Steve and Jason are great guys to work with. I will have them back to more work for me."

"Great work! Wrex It, LLC completed extensive grading and redlining work around our pond and dam area. GAry?s attention to detail and knowledge of proper drainage and soil management were impressive. "I was contacted the same day as I posted my need, Mr Franklin came by and gave me a reasonable price to do the work and stated he could do it the next day. He picked up the supplies from Lowes where I had ordered them and brought it to my home. His crew did a great job of replacing 5 shrubs and laying new mulch. They were efficient, and were friendly while doing the job. I am very pleased with the work they did. Would definitely recommend them to others. Thanks again, Bea"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

Trenches are typically 12 to 24 inches deep and 8 inches wide. However, the required depth depends on the specific project and local ordinances. For example, a French drain may need to be 18 inches deep, while a water pipe might require a depth of 24 inches and a drainage pipe 36 inches. Your city or county may have specific regulations, so it's wise to consult with an excavation professional to determine the correct depth for your project.

Completion time ranges from days to weeks, contingent on project size, environmental conditions, and regulatory approvals.

Excavations take a few days or up to a few weeks. The time it takes to excavate an area depends on the size of the area, the type of soil, the type of excavator, and even the time of year, since winter can make digging up the ground more difficult.

Whether you grind or dig up and remove your tree stump depends on your landscaping goals. Using a stump grinder leaves the root system in place for it to decompose over time, whereas digging up the tree stump removes the roots and the stump. Overall, stump grinding is a far simpler process since you won’t need to deal with the roots. Stump removal will make your yard look like a demolition site, but you’ll have an easier time replanting in the same place as your former tree.
