The vast majority of hinges are symmetrical, and either side of the hinge can go on the door or the frame. Occasionally, you'll find a hinge specifically made for right or left-handed doors with different attachment hardware or larger plates on one side. In most cases, the large side of the hinge goes on the frame.

It is possible to install hinges backward, so be careful when placing them. Position the hinge so that the hinge pin faces the direction the door will swing. For example, if you're standing on the side the door will open into, the pin should be visible. Be extra careful when installing exterior doors, as placing the hinges on the outside for an outward-facing door makes your home much easier to break into.

Interior door thresholds are usually attached using finish nails, and some contractors will also use construction adhesive under the threshold to hold it in place. Exterior door thresholds are more commonly screwed to prevent them from pulling up when people step on the raised edge on the outside of the door. Exterior doors also include caulk sealant on the inside to prevent water and air from seeping through.

You should prime interior doors before painting for the best results. If you do paint directly on the wood, you could see some of the grain patterns show through the paint, in which case you’d need to apply additional coats. Priming the surface before painting will reduce the number of coats and can better cover the grain pattern for a clean, finished look.

The lock block will either be built-in on the side of the door or run from the top to the bottom. Usually, there is a marking that indicates its location. You can also tap the door with the back of a screwdriver to find the lock block like you would find a stud in a wall.

Which way your garden gate opens mainly comes down to preference. While other types of gates, like one leading from the sidewalk to your property, should swing inward rather than outward to avoid opening into a public space, you don’t have to worry about such an issue in a backyard garden. However, a garden gate that swings inward may still be useful when carrying heavy loads into the space, like a wheelbarrow filled with mulch or heavy wood boards for building new garden beds.
