"Jorge and his team are hard working professionals. Our project was big and complex. We took possession of our home in mid-June and by the first week of August Jorge and his team renovated three bathrooms, added an half bathroom, remodeled all 1000 square feet in our basement, installed new hardwood flooring, and painted almost 90% of our house. Throughout the project there was not a day when Jorge and his team were not working. We wanted a finished product where every detail met our expectations, and Jorge delivered just that. Fernando was an artist installing our tile and stone columns. Luis’s finish carpentry and trim installation was top notch. The final cleanup exceeded our expectations. We will certainly contact Jorge for future projects at our home and we have already recommended him to family and friends. Thanks Jorge and thank you to everybody that helped us on the George’s Construction team."

"The contracted the work off to a third party. Jon took longer than expected. The windows was installed pretty good from the looks. Communication could have been better with knowing the job will take longer and what types of trims I wanted for the windows. As the contractor that was hired for this job by this company. Did a good job with putting up decent trim. As for the new windows they look great. I purchased the myself and hired sentri homes to install them. I will need to have a my siding on my house redone to be closer to the new windows so the gaps are not so obvious. That was not expected at first. But from old storm windows and not knowing how they were put in originally. There was some unknown things that was learned from the job being completed. I will have the siding of the house slightly done to match really good for what I wanted later on. My only concern is better communication with sentri homes. Overall they were great when I did talk to them."

"I feel very fortunate to have found Distinctive Design Remodeling at a home and garden show. A representative met with me immediately after I contacted them and spent the time to fully listen to my needs and expectations. We had met with several other builders and were very impressed by Jesse. His estimate was precise and included all aspects of the room addition project. Every one of the sub contractors did a superb job and Chris, the project manager, keep me informed every step of the way. I could not be more pleased with our new addition and would absolutely use DDR again and refer them to anyone looking for a remodeling company"

"To start out, I should point out that I have built a number of decks in my life; and have lived in California, Colorado, Florida, and here in Kentucky. I currently work in commercial construction, but know both residential and commercial building codes. I typically do all the work around my house; everything from fixing plumbing issues to rewiring electrical, and everything in between. I don’t like to hire contractors because they don’t call you back, disappear after payment, and generally don’t do the work to my standards. I will not, however, get up on the backside of our deck and move 6x6x20 beams to support a roof 35' in the air. So I went through the process of hiring someone I felt was qualified. Since I have the experience, I know how much a project of this magnitude should cost, and how long it should take. I called about 20 contractors around Louisville to get quotes for the work, and besides not getting calls back from a lot of contractors, or bids obviously too low or way too high, I lucked out and got a referral to K&L Home Improvement to build the deck. I found pictures of their work on Facebook, and looked at their current and previous projects to see what they can do, and the quality of their finished product. I then called Keevin Thomas, and had him come to the house and explained what I wanted him to do. I should point out I didn’t tell him my background, and didn’t tell him how to do the job. I only told him what I wanted it to look like. The same thing I told 20 other estimators/contractors before him. He definitely knew all the code requirements, and pointed out code compliance issues he would correct when he rebuilt the existing deck (my deck lacked joist hangers, stringers were undersized in one area) and issues he would solve when expanding the roof. He also came back for a second visit with his roofer/framer because he wanted to make sure he captured everything in his estimate before giving me a final quote. Trust me, this is a BIG plus, because I don’t want to find out half way through the work that you forgot to include gutters, or vinyl siding, or didn’t realize the roof trusses would have to be replaced and now my cost is going up to cover your mistake. He knew exactly what had to be done, and exactly how to do it. I received his quote, and while it wasn’t the cheapest, it was one of the more comprehensive and detailed estimates, explaining exactly what they would do, and how it would be accomplished. I accepted his quote, and he was able to get his guys to my house the following week to start the work, well exceeding my expectations in a busy construction market. What can I say about the workers; it’s COLD outside, but they still pulled off the existing deck and roof, efficiently built the new structure, sealed it up, and completed the work in about two weeks, just like I expected. The other thing I expected, and got, was a call or visit from Keevin each day to make sure everything was proceeding as expected. He walked me through the process of what his guys were going to be focusing on that day, asked if there was anything I needed/if I had any concerns, and brought any issues to my attention (like the shingles were a difficult match because of previous work on the roof in that area) I expect a good contractor to talk to and explain his plan before proceeding, even though they are the experts. At one point, we were having the roof torn off to replace, and I saw there was a major storm coming in a few days on the news. He had a plan in place to cover the house with a tarp days before, just in case, and promised the work would be completed before the rainstorm. He did, in fact, meet every promise he made on the project, including this one, and the roof was ready for a heavy downpour. The work went off without a hitch, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. I’m glad I met Keevin, and would call him again if we needed more work done on the house now or in the future. It’s nice to know there is a reputable, honorable contractor doing work in Louisville. I can’t say enough good things about the overall experience and the results. If you’ve hired contractors before, you know the stress involved with having someone tear up part of your existing home. Everything is finished and exceeds even MY expectations."

"

Mike Rushing of Extreme Construction was very responsive and timely from the start. We have a large house with a slate roof. We had two other roofing companies come out--a local one here in Louisville and a regional one out of Ohio that specializes in Slate. The local company just wanted to replace the roof with a normal shingle roof, which would have taken away value from the house and been inconsistent with its stature. The regional company specializes in slate and wanted to repair the roof at a cost in excess of $50,000. Moreover, they indicated that very little of the damage would be covered by insurance and, therefore, indicated that no insurance claim would be warranted.

Mike with Extreme Construction was the only one who advised that the damage was caused by wind, ice, and hail damage and the only one to suggest that he be allowed to interface directly with the insurance company's adjuster. The process of dealing with the insurance company was handled on a very timely and competent basis by Mike.  He was terrific, and has continued to be terrific, in all respects--timeliness, professionalism, knowledge, and competency. Very easy to work with and works 7 days a week (it's his company). The interior work has been excellent. The actual roof work, as covered by the insurance, has been delayed due to snow and ice, but I'm sure that it will reflect the same excellence that Mike has shown with respect to the interior work. I will update this review when the roofing work is completed.

"I took recommendations from friends and then came to Angie's List to check out the reviews. After taking bids, I decided on Prudential for my new furnace. Given how much money it was, I was more than a little nervous. I shouldn't have been because the service I got was really stellar. My old furnace was nearly 50 years old and huge, located in a tiny space. It had to be cut apart with a blow torch. The guys who did the job had to spend all day taking the old furnace out, which put them behind. The next day when it appeared I'd be without heat with a big temperature drop predicted, they worked extra hard and their boss even came over to help them so that I wouldn't have to leave my home that night. They were hard-working, professional, and friendly, and the price was competitive, matching or beating every bid I got. And the final product is working great!"

"I ordered the deal. I called the company. The owner was very nice but very busy. He then sent a subcontractor who had only been working with him a few weeks to our house. He said the project would take met than 6 hours and left. We decided not to have someone we knew nothing about in our home plus spend alot more money. The owner said to get our money back. Thanks you."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

A custom home is one that you design from the ground up, allowing you to customize everything from the square footage to the interior layout to all of the materials used. A spec home is one that a builder has designed and gotten approvals for. Spec homes may give you some limited options for the layout and materials, but most of the build is pre-set. Custom homes cost more and take longer to build.

The primary reason homes have crawl spaces is so the foundation can reach down below the frost line to avoid dangerous soil movement and structural damage when the ground freezes. They’re more popular in colder climates where the ground freezes down to a few feet, and slabs are most popular in warmer areas where there is no frost line. Crawl spaces also provide a space for utility lines to run where they’re at less of a risk of freezing.

Historically, Tudor homes originally stemmed from the 15th and 16th centuries, while Victorians appeared during Queen Victoria's reign in the 19th century. The design and structural differences are significant as well. The many types of Victorian architecture—such as Italianate architecture—typically feature ornate trim, wood siding, wraparound porches, and tall towers on top, such as belvederes. On the other hand, Tudor-style homes feature white stucco exteriors with exposed wooden rafters marking the house frame both inside and out.

Craftsman-style homes are predominantly found in the Western United States, specifically in Southern California, where the style originated. Since the climate was mild and there was access to plenty of natural resources, Southern California became a hub for this style at its inception. That being said, if you consult with an architect near you, you can have a Craftsman-style home anywhere.

Framing is often the most expensive phase of building a house because it’s time-consuming and requires a lot of materials. It costs between $20,000 and $50,000 on average, depending on materials and labor costs. Before construction begins, it’s possible that purchasing land is the priciest step in the process. Some plots of land sell for $3,000, while others cost upwards of $150,000.
