"Jon did several jobs for me and did a good job. I then gave him a larger landscaping job. He completed part of the job. I paid him for materials to build a small bridge for me, but he never built the bridge. He did not complete the job of mulching flowerbeds. I have tried multiple times to get him to finish the work and he has only made excuses. It has been 4-5 months since he stopped work. He owes me $1,300.00 that I will probably never get back, therefore, I DO NOT recommend Jon Sollenberger, dba Timberwolf Landscaping and Home Repair."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

It’s usually best to buy plants from a local greenhouse or nursery yourself, but landscapers are also a reliable option. First, you can choose exactly what plants you want based on their appearance rather than relying on your landscaper to choose. Additionally, while it’s more time-consuming to go buy the plants yourself, you’ll often save money because landscapers charge for delivery and may upcharge the plants. You can also speak to a professional at a nursery to ensure you understand how to care for your plants and get the most long-term value.

Since the nature of the landscaping project can heavily influence the overall cost, it helps to understand what different types of landscaping projects cost on average. For example:

  • Plant a tree: $100–$2,000

  • Build a retaining wall: $3,250–$9,200

  • Reseed a lawn: $450–$1,700

  • Install a water fountain: $950–$4,800

  • Install a paver patio: $2,400–$7,000

  • Install a concrete walkway: $1,200–$2,400

  • Install a flower bed: $800–$3,000

  • Landscape lighting: $2,000–$6,000

Consulting your local university extension, Audubon society, or municipal urban forestry program are all good ideas when choosing a tree to plant. You can also ask an arborist or a knowledgeable landscaping company for advice on good trees to plant.

DIY home gardening can be relaxing, joyful, and cost-effective. From mowing your lawn to planting your own flower beds, there is a wide variety of gardening tasks that you can do yourself to make your yard look beautiful. If you’d rather spend your time not in the dirt, or if you’d like someone to take care of your plants for you, calling a professional gardening service is best. They can give you a workup of what services you’ll need and how often to schedule them.

It is possible to plant a tree over a ground stump if it was ground very deeply. However, it is typically best to plant elsewhere so your new tree has room to establish a strong, healthy root system. If you want to plant a tree in the same spot where you currently have a stump, you may want to consider other options, such as stump removal.
