In particular, it’s likely that small pests such as rats and mice that only need tiny gaps to squeeze through will end up in your walls and ductwork. Larger animals like raccoons may be limited to an enclosed attic.

The safest ways to treat bed bugs are non-chemical, such as using diatomaceous earth, essential oils, and heat and cold treatments. Heat treatments are also one of the most effective methods because it kills bed bugs at all levels of life stages: eggs, nymphs, and adults. However, you still need to take precautions by removing items that can be susceptible to heat damage. You also need to remove plants and pets from your home during treatment.

In many places, killing bees or destroying a hive is discouraged or regulated due to their crucial role as pollinators. Specific laws vary by region, and certain bee species are protected due to declining populations. Some states require permits or restrict who can remove or exterminate bee colonies. Always check local laws before attempting to manage or remove a beehive.

Once the animals and their young are out of the house, remove the nest and locate any entry points. Some may be difficult to find because some animals can fit through very small holes. Once you’ve located as many entry points as possible, use materials such as metal or masonry to block off the entry. Ideally, you should choose materials that most animals cannot chew through. Create a one-way door or flap to allow animals to leave but not return. Additional methods include using repellants designed to make an area unappealing to the types of animals that find your home so inviting. 

Spotting a single scorpion in the home doesn’t mean you have a full-blown infestation, but it does mean there’s a way for them to get inside. Other scorpions could easily use the same method, like entering through an air vent, as these arachnids are social creatures that tend to live in groups. If you see a baby scorpion, however, that likely indicates a nest somewhere in the home. This is also true if you spot a scorpion with an infant on its back.
