"The road works, but does not look good. The tar under-coat is plainly visible in many places because they only put one thin layer of tar & chip stone over about half of the job vs 2 layers on half. This difference came about because I agreed to an upsell near the end of the original job. They verbally offered me a reduced price to finish another area I wanted done (but could not originally afford), because they said they had "left over material" and "their equipment was on site." I had a contract for the original part of the job, but unwisely assumed the added work would be done the same as the original contract work (which was for 2 layers). It was not. When I complained about the noticeable difference between the areas, they informed me they were only putting one layer on the added area. They refused to abide by the contract saying it only applied to the original area. If I hired them again I would ensure a written contract for everything, especially upsell jobs, and I would not pay them in full up front. Under those conditions I believe they would do a good job."

The stones do not work well on uneven ground. If the stones are not buried into the ground and made level upon installation, they almost certainly will shift or crack on uneven ground. Additionally, rainwater or water from sprinklers can run under the edge of an uneven paver, causing erosion. Sealing the driveway is crucial to protect it from water damage and freeze-thaw cycles. Before applying a sealant, pressure wash the surface to remove any loose sealant, dirt, or stains, as sealing over them will trap them. Any cracks or expansion joints should be filled with a flexible polyurethane caulk or asphalt sealer. In colder climates, use sand instead of salt for de-icing. Sand helps melt snow and ice without accelerating the freeze-thaw process, which can cause cracks.

The best way to stop your pavers from sinking is to ensure you've properly compacted the base layers. Use your paver compactor and work over the base layer several times to create the hardest possible base. If the soil and sand of your base are compact, you’ll experience less shifting and sinking.

Decomposed granite and caliche can both harden into a solid surface using a plate compactor. However, due to decomposed granite’s fine particles, it’s not suitable for driveway surfaces. Some homeowners use pea gravel mixed with a gravel-binding resin to bind the loose stones and create a solid surface that won’t shift like loose gravel.
