"I gave Rowan a deposit and gave him a max budget. The max budget was contingent on what the project was, and we talked about that in person when he came and did his first consultation. Between the office and the Owner we spoke many times on the phone over about 3 months. I also communicated with their office via email which is also documented. Every time we spoke I was transparent and stated that because of the fact that there wasn't a detailed cost breakdown, I could not justify the project being worth 15k from the information provided.  So, at no point past the initial picture did we speak about moving forward with work on this project.  I paid a thousand-dollar deposit that we agreed was nonrefundable. However, that was based on our verbal consultation which in that consult they were very misleading in regards of how the project would go and how it would be priced. All that was provided from their company was a picture giving me a layout of what they would provide for my landscaping. That was not a 1000 dollars' worth of time and effort. Especially because of the fact that the information that was presented to me before the deposit was provided was not accurate and again, I have expressed that to them via call and email multiple times. I tried to resolve this matter with the owner and after multiple attempts I finally received an email stating that I was out of luck and that the $1000 was nonrefundable no matter what."

Pavers and Hardscaping questions, answered by experts

The answer to whether or not you need to get a permit before you start your driveway can vary widely based on local ordinances and the scope of your driveway ideas. In most urban and suburban areas, a permit is needed before building a new driveway to ensure that a homeowner is using safe materials and proper drainage practices while designing and constructing a new driveway. In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.

Permeable paving is a good option for a lot of reasons. It can help prevent flooding, keeps harmful chemicals from polluting our water, and can divert water away from your home’s foundation. Plus, it can add a rustic aesthetic to your outdoor area, might prevent pests who breed in water, and may even qualify for tax rebates.

A traditional driveway gate isn’t your only option when installing a barricade in front of your driveway. A security gate like a swing gate, double swing gate, bi-folding gate, vertical gate, or pivot gate could work just as well as your driveway gate—if not better for your home depending on which qualities you’re after. Like sliding driveway gates, many of these alternatives work with automatic features that simplify entering and exiting your property.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

Concrete is typically the best material for a driveway if you’re looking for longevity, cost-effectiveness, and ease of maintenance. But, it’s not ideal for areas with annual freeze-frost cycles, nor is it the most attractive option—although you can get it stamped or painted. If your location is consistently below freezing, asphalt may be a better choice.
