21 years of experience

I'm in my mid 40's & have done construction, landscaping, painting, wood cutting, & lots of remodeling jobs. This includes houses, barns, sheds, & about any other structure you can name. I started being the local Handyman at the age of 16, so I've got over 30 years experience in many areas. I'm a hard worker, who refuses to do anything, unless it's going to be done right. If you want something done in a dangerous or incorrect way, I'm not your man. I take pride in my work,& won't start something I can't finish. I'm not afraid to get dirty to get a job done either. I have a strong back, & am very fair when bidding a job. I enjoy doing things to help people that aren't able to do themselves. I'm not done until my customer is satisfied. Period.

Handyman Services questions, answered by experts

The average handyperson charges $50 to $150 per hour. The exact amount varies based on several factors, including where you live, the difficulty of the job, and the handyperson’s level of experience. Other factors like the cost of travel, permits, and materials might come into play, too. Customers should also anticipate a minimum flat rate of around two hours of work for a handyperson to agree to a job.

In most states, handypeople do not need to be licensed to perform simple home repair tasks and smaller jobs. When projects exceed specific cost amounts, however, ranging from $500 in California to $50,000 in other states, some municipalities consider them to be contractors, meaning they need to be licensed. To learn if your handyperson should be licensed to work on your job, contact your local governing body or state contractors’ licensing board before starting any work.

While handypeople do not need to be licensed in many places, you should only hire insured pros for any home improvement work. Your handyperson should have active liability coverage that protects them and you in the case of an error or accident. Furthermore, if they have employees on your property, they should also have workers’ compensation insurance. If you hire an individual or a company that is not insured and they damage your property, have an accident while on the job, or become injured on your property without insurance, you can be held financially liable.

Handypeople usually don’t hold trade licenses, so they typically aren’t qualified to tackle projects involving installing or making alterations to plumbing or electrical lines. Below are some jobs that a handyperson usually won’t be able to complete:

  • Installing plumbing for a new kitchen or bathroom

  • Replacing plumbing pipes

  • Installing or repairing septic systems

  • Running new electrical wiring

  • Installing a subpanel

The biggest benefit of hiring a handyperson over DIY is guaranteeing they’ll do the project correctly. This might save money in the long run and prevent future issues from arising. Hiring a handyperson also saves you the hassle of doing the job yourself. Finally, some projects pose safety risks, so hiring an experienced pro is much safer.
