We are a small family owned Home Improvement Company serving most of central/northern Indiana. All of our jobs are done with a printed contract with an estimated completion date. Our quality of work is very high due to having a small crew that does every job to the same standard. You will never receive a sub-contractor from Griffin Construction. The same person who bids your job will be there working from start to finish. We specialize in custom kitchens and baths with beautiful tile installs, but also cover any other needs you may have for your home.

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

Apply a sealant to your cabinets to repel water and moisture. This will help prevent further water damage from developing, such as mold and rotting wood. Lacquer, polyurethane, and varnish are commonly used sealants with waterproofing abilities. Brush them onto your cabinets and follow the manufacturer's instructions on drying time, which can take up to several hours.

Like most special-order items, custom cabinets have several pros and cons to consider when buying new cabinets. Custom cabinets are typically more expensive than prefabricated cabinet options, but the work often reflects the quality. Custom cabinets tend to last 20 or more years, but the time it takes to install them is typically longer than other cabinets—roughly 6 to 8 weeks on average from the time of ordering. However, a major benefit is the ability to personalize every aspect of your cabinetry, from cabinet hardware to custom paint colors.

There is no official name for an open gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. However, when that area is covered with a boxy shape to hide wires or pipes, this is known as a soffit. In some cases, this area may also be hidden with a bulkhead, a lower ceiling area that fits just above the cabinets.

Depending on its size and the quality of the installation, a floating vanity can hold up to 220 pounds. The total weight it holds includes the countertop, sink, and anyone resting on the vanity as they wash their face or brush their teeth. Be sure to talk with your contractor and check the manufacturer’s specifications to determine how much weight your vanity can take.

There are a few different types of paints that you can use on cabinets—latex, acrylic, and oil-based. Most cabinet painters choose latex, but acrylic paints are also a great choice. In addition to the type of paint, you also need to select a finish. Matte finishes tend to be less durable, whereas semi-gloss or high-gloss options are better for highly-used cabinets.

It’s important to note that regular wall paint does not adhere to cabinets correctly—you’ll need cabinet-specific paint.
