"K & L Excavating removed an inground fuel oil tank, hauled it away and filled in the hole. I was impressed with their professionalism and they left the area looking great. They had the right equipment and were cleaned up and gone in 2 hours and 45 minutes."

"It went excellent. It was like a third of the price of what the dealer wanted. I had broken a door handle. He came to my house to do the work. He calls you before he shows up. I would absolutely recommend him. I have used him before as well, and he is an amazing/honest guy. He is one of those rare people who does what he says he is going to do. He is a road scholar. He is the first one I call when I have a project around the house."

"Our initial date got rained out, and since the work was ALL outside, we asked to reschedule, which John did without hesitation.
The rescheduled date was perfect and sunny and they showed up right on time.
I had tons of jobs in my old house that needed doing, but we settled on three for this session and purpose of the big deal:
  • Fix a downspout
  • repair a broken concrete step
  • repair a gate on an eight foot privacy fence.
Our house is a MONSTER (a three story victorian with an attic and basement).  One of the jobs I needed to handle was a downspout that had fallen during a storm.  No big deal, right?   WRONG.  I had five other contractors look at the job and refused to even touch it.  John not only agreed to the task, but was able to fix it better than it originally was.
A concrete step had a large portion of the corner broken off, and a second railing could not be added due to the missing concrete.
This was fixed quickly and he even came back afterward to remove the form so we didn't have to take care of that.  Did I mention that he cleared the weeds from around the porch for me while he built the form?
The final job was a fence that has seen better days.  Since it is an 8 foot fence, the gate is rather large and heavy.
Over time it had begun to sag and it was being held closed by a heavy brick.
John took off the gate, repaired the broken board, replaced the hardware, added support to the framework, and rehung it.  We now have a perfect swinging gate that does not sag and keeps our doggies safe.
I am more than happy with the work that was performed and we will be calling  again!

"WOW! I'm elderly and have hired dozens of handymen over the years! Mike is one of the best (if not the very best) I've ever employed! Mike is prompt, resourceful, hard working, diligent, dependable, and over the last couple of weeks shown to be smart, responsive and always polite. I have yet to challenge him with a project (and there have been several) that he has not done to my total satisfaction. I will gladly share more detail. BTW: I accidentally met Mike three weeks ago at the Home Depot check-out line where he kindly offered to help load some purchases in my trunk, so this recommendation isn't coming from a relative or acquaintance......this young man is outstanding!"

Gate Repair questions, answered by experts

For homeowners concerned about security, an electric gate may offer peace of mind. Electric gates will require a code or remote to open, so you don’t have to worry about young children getting out of the yard or someone breaking onto your property by simply swinging open the gate. But because it needs power to operate, installing an electric gate will be more complex and expensive.

In most cases, you will need a permit to install a new driveway or property gate. An exception might be if you are simply replacing an existing gate. Before issuing a permit, your local municipality may require a site plan or survey to verify property lines and prevent encroachment on a neighbor's property. Permits for a gate typically cost under $100. Be aware that corner properties may have additional restrictions on gate height or style. It's wise to confirm permit requirements with your local building department or your gate installation company, which can usually handle the entire permitting process for you.

This largely depends on the layout of your property and your preferred walking route to various entryways. Take your time figuring out the perfect spot for the gate to avoid difficulties later on. With all this said, the best place to put a gate is an area free from obstructions that offer the shortest route to your house.

The cost to install a gate varies widely, with a typical range between $1,500 and $7,000. The average cost is around $3,500. However, the final price can be as low as $200 for a simple gate or as high as $12,000 for a large, automated security gate.

Key factors that determine the installation cost include:

  • Gate Material: This is a primary cost factor. Chain-link and vinyl are the most affordable, while wood and PVC are mid-range options. Wrought iron, aluminum, and other metals are the most expensive materials.

  • Automation: Automated gates are significantly more expensive than manual ones because they require motors, sensors, controls, and electrical installation.

  • Size and Type: The dimensions and style of the gate (e.g., swinging vs. sliding) will impact the price.

  • Security Level: Gates with advanced security features will increase the overall cost.

It can cost $100 to $500 to purchase and install a gate opener. You can use ready-made kits that come with DIY instructions. If you hire a professional gate installer to handle the job, expect to pay an average of $100 per hour or between $200 and $500.
