"Just now getting to this review that is long overdue. I hired Coach House to construct a detached 14'x22' garage for my dream woodworking shop. In short, the project from start to finish went extremely well and I am very pleased with the end result. Let me preface this review by saying that I am a very tough customer who doesn't tolerate inferior quality. Jeff Grummer, who served as the project manager and designer was very professional and easy to work with. He listened to my needs and delivered exactly what I wanted. The construction process was amazing. At 7:00 am on build day, a team of six pulled up to our house with a flat-bed semi. By 9:00 am the structure was up and by the end of the day it was roofed, sided, and completely enclosed. The cost per square foot for my garage was probably higher than most as I had some very significant electrical and other unique requests. I would use Coach House again in a heartbeat. Please note, the garden gates and garage pergola/overhang shown in the photos were added by the homeowner."

"Found Sentri on Angi. Jeanette and Violet were very pleasant and efficient in getting a contractor to me in the time frame needed. The contractor was excellent and the roof looks great! I would definitely work with them again if I had additional projects."

Hi there! I have about 9 years of experience with home remodeling, house flips, and currently I am focused more on carpentry (custom closets, interior/exterior trim, etc.) and flooring. I am still open to most home repair needs. I am new to Angi, but feel free to check out some photos of my work in the project photos. I am also willing to share more photos. Feel free to email me at [email protected] or call/text at 3179032308. Thanks!

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Joists and beams are both part of the flooring system above your basement, with the beams spanning the length of your home and getting support from vertical posts underneath, and joists usually spanning half the width of your home with no support posts underneath. The floor joists provide even support to the subflooring and flooring above, and they distribute that load to the beams. The beams then distribute that load down through the support posts to the foundation.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

Many modern homes have soffits, but older ones don’t, and you may be wondering why. Older homes have eaves that extend further beyond the home and help to circulate air, negating the need for a soffit. This style of building has faded away, therefore, modern homes need separate soffit installation. Modern soffits are more efficient than this older style and require less material to construct, saving homeowners money.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Landscape timbers can last 10 to 20 years in the ground when installed correctly. Pressure-treated timbers will last longer than non-treated ones, as pressure treatment makes the wood more rot-resistant. Wood exposed to high moisture levels or extreme temperature and weather fluctuations may not last as long as wood in drier areas with more consistent weather.
