Linoleum floors have color that goes all the way through the tile, while vinyl flooring uses a printed image on the surface of the tile, plank, or sheet. Technically, you can install carpet without padding. While skipping the padding can help you save on the project, it will make the carpet less comfortable and show uneven spots or imperfections in the subfloor.
