Customers say: True professional

"We needed a new hand built Victorian/European fireplace with frame work, mantel and decorations. After three years of searching for a professional carpenter to do the specialized work for the fireplace, we found Val. Val knew instinctively what we were needing for the fireplace. Val is an intelligent master craftsman in carpentry and has the knowledge, skills and the ability as well as the passion and commitment to his work, All of these traits are shown in the quality of his work and in the end product. The client/professional carpenter relationship was excellent. We will hire Val again."

"They completed the entire roofing project in two days time. However, the inside trim work around the skylights has been delayed for three weeks. The good thing is that I've held back a hefty amount of monies to finish paying off the project. I get there are delays based upon who does what type of specialty work. The carpenter is scheduled for next week Tuesday. We'll see."

"Luke assessed the situation and we discussed a few solutions and then we both agreed on the best course of action. He obtained the necessary materials and did the temporary fix until I contact him again in the Spring to finalize the project. Very satisfied with his demeanor and efficiency in tackling the job at hand. I highly recommend Luke for any of your handy work that you may have."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Professionals charge between $60 and $95 per hour to install ornamental porch columns. The amount of time they need varies based on the condition of the porch, whether they need to remove old columns, and if there is any damage to your porch's structure. This cost can increase if more issues come up during the installation process.
