"Over the phone, we discussed prices on a key that wasn’t working anymore to be reprogrammed and one duplicated for a spare. I was quoted $150 for my key to be fixed/reprogrammed and $280 total for my key to be reprogrammed then duplicated for spare. I let him know I was at work but my mother was at my home with my key and the car and she’ll be there to give payment upon completion of work. She gave him the key and he was unable to reprogram it because he said there was corrosion and would have to make a completely new key for $290. I told him I’d pass at that price because the original quote was for two keys at that price and also Ive been quoted way cheaper elsewhere for one key. He then said it’ll be $125 diagnostics fee if I didn’t want to pay 280 for him to make me a new key!! I told him he never discussed a diagnostic fee and he didn’t diagnose anything, I told him before he came the key wasn’t working anymore. I didn’t need to pay $125 for what I already knew and discussed with him prior. Then when my mom came out to get the key back this a****** kept going off about owing him $125 and pulled off refusing to give back my key! (It didn’t work anyways). If he felt he was right to charge me $125 for not being able to reprogram my key cool, take it up with the small claims court, but to take it in your own hands and steal the key from my mom was bs."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

A deadbolt has a different design, construction, and security level than a regular lock. Regular locks are mostly used for interior doors around the home, like bedrooms and bathrooms, and they usually include a locking mechanism on the inside. While regular locks are easy to use and install, they provide little security.

A deadbolt adds a layer of security and is most commonly used on exterior doors. The installation is typically more complicated, but they hold up to wear and tear.

If your door handle turns without opening, the most likely culprit is a loose or stripped spindle. This part connects the handles to the latch mechanism, and when it’s not properly engaged, turning the handle does nothing. Other issues might include a broken latch, loose screws, or even something small blocking an inner mechanism. In any case, it’s usually a matter of tightening, adjusting, or replacing a worn-out part inside the handle assembly—or calling in a professional to do it for you.

Begin by checking the power source, typically a battery or wired connection. Ensure the battery is installed correctly, has sufficient charge, and isn't corroded. If it's a wired lock, examine the electrical connections to confirm they are secure and free from damage. Additionally, inspect the lock's programming or settings. Confirm that user codes or access credentials are programmed correctly and that any remote control devices are paired and functional.

The most secure lock for a front door is typically a deadbolt. There are many types of deadbolts to choose from, the most basic of which is the standard single-cylinder deadbolt. This is the lock you find installed on most front doors. For added security, you could go with a double-cylinder deadbolt, which requires a key to operate the lock from both the outside and the inside.

The cost-effectiveness of fixing or replacing a door lock depends on the severity of the issue. Repairing a minor problem, such as loose screws or a need for lubrication, is usually cheaper than replacing the entire lock. However, replacing the lock if it is severely damaged, outdated, or lacks security features may be a better long-term investment. New locks often have improved security features, enhancing your property's safety.
