"I've used Deck Pro on a regular basis. Jason does a great job. He's very efficient and my plants don't end up splashed with deck stain, always a plus!"

"Joe is who I worked with and he was very quick to respond, polite, reasonable priced and got the work done when he said he would. Sealed around chimney and vents on roof, cleaned, replaced boards and stained deck, looked like new again, when he was done. I was so impressed I have already referred him to my sister and friends. I will definitely use them again!"

"They did an excellent job. I wasn't sure my deck and fence could be saved since it had been a while since I had done anything to them. But, with a lot of hard work and care, everything looks fabulous now. Dale leans toward perfectionism. He and his helper took a lot of time and care to make sure everything was done right and the customer is pleased. He explained to us that the stain penetrates into the wood and hydrates it so it retards cracking. And there is a warranty for both the deck and the fence. I highly recommend Desk Rescue."

"Fantastic job! My deck is 25 years old and had many layers of stain. Exterior Wood Restoration removed every bit of the old stain and restored the deck to like new condition. The crew was prompt, and worked diligently for 2 full days to complete the job in relentless heat! We are thrilled with the job they did."

"Marcos was wonderful to work with.  He communicated in a very timely manner by email and text messages about setting up a possible date to have my bedroom painted.  On the day (which was a Saturday) the room was to be painted he texted me to say they were running just a few minutes late.   Marcos and Jose were very professional and nice.  They took precautions to protect the premises.  They prep the room and applied 2 coats of paint in about 1.5 hrs.  The painting was perfect!  All nail holes, etc were patched.  They cleaned up their supplies, tape etc.  There was no accidental paint splattering on the molding or the carpet.  We discussed further painting projects and Marcos' verbal price indications seem to be very competitive.  I will definitely be using them again for a bigger painting project.  I highly recommend Lara Painting Services!

"Paul and crew painted the upstairs hallway, kitchen, family room and mudroom. The crew did a great job on the walls and trim and cleaned up nicely. Their price is very competitive as well. This was the second time we have used Protect and Preserve and wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future.

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The cost to repair a deck is between $900 and $3,500, depending on the cause and extent of the damage. For example, fixing a sinking deck caused by pest damage can cost between $200 and $600, while replacing sinking boards costs between $500 and $4,000.

Expect to spend around $10,000 to $11,000 to replace a 20-by-20-foot deck. Using high-end materials like composite or exotic hardwoods can drive up the cost, as can custom features and design elements. You can also expect to pay more than average if your deck replacement requires a site evaluation or if you need the work done during the busy season.

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. If you live somewhere that experiences high winds and earthquakes, you may need to dig for your deck posts. Deck blocks, post anchors with base plates, and helical pile systems are the three no-dig deck post options you can choose from if local code permits.
