"Extremely disappointed. He asked what kind of mower I had, and described it as shown above; specifically, it has a 5.5-horsepower engine. Despite the presence of a large Briggs and Stratton sign outside the location, I was told "we don't work on Craftsman mowers anymore." I asked him when that started, and he said, "oh, about five years ago." Considering this is a Toro dealer, I guess they make more money selling new Toros than they do repairing old Craftsman mowers. It's a good thing I didn't bring the mower with me, as I would have had to lug it back into the storage shed."

Lawn Tool Repair questions, answered by experts

It's a good idea to lubricate your mower blades and mowing deck with something protective like WD40 that prevents rust and helps stop grass and dirt from sticking to the blades and deck.

Replacing a lawn mower pull cord yourself should only cost you the supplies, which comes to around $25. For more complex repairs, you’ll need to get a quote from a local lawn mower repair shop.

Lawnmowers require seasonal maintenance to continue working correctly. With routine maintenance, you can extend its life to the fullest, which is around 10 years for push mowers and 5-8 years for riding mowers. To keep your lawn mower working correctly, you’ll want to take the following steps at least once a year:

  • Replace the spark plug

  • Change the oil

  • Drain the fuel tank

  • Clean the mowing deck (ideally, after every mow)

  • Replace the air filter

  • Check the carburetor

  • Sharpen the blades

  • Fog the engine

  • Check the tires

You might notice that problems are more frequent when you pull your lawn mower out of storage. Regularly using and maintaining your lawn mower can help prevent issues. Don’t know where to start? Try these essential lawn mower maintenance tips.

A standard home lawn mower with sharp blades can handle a thin layer of leaves without issue. You may need to make a couple of passes within several days to mulch leaves down, but your mower shouldn’t struggle. If your mower comes with a mulching kit, like an attachment to blow leaves out the side, that’s a good sign it’s ready for fall leaves. Set your mower to the highest or near-highest height for this project so it focuses on the leaves rather than the grass below.
