Electronic Gadget Repair

- BroughtVaio in for a DC plug repair / replacement (kid damage, apparently known problem with this model).  Not under warranty - about 3 years old.

- Vaio shipped to service center.  Center rep called to discuss issue (good) noting that the pass down notes were poor (bad) and that there was no power cord (provided, store failed to ship it with the laptop).

- Laptop returned to store - DC plug damaged in shipment.  Returned to service center for second repair (at no cost).

- Laptop returned, diagnostic discovered hard drive starting to fail due to bad sectors.  No indication of this prior to turn into Best Buy but it may be possible.  Authorized repair.

- Laptop repaired.  Geek Squad records poor. I had to explain the entire repair sequence and go over a detailed review of the authorized charges because the records were not complete.  I did not authorize Best Buy to order / install the Sony Recovery Disks as with a good hard drive the system should boot up and start loading with the Sony factory recovery disks.

- Attempted to install Sony Recovery Disks (purchased from Sony).  Failed with error "332" = hard drive failed.  Sony phone technician and I worked a variety of options.  Technician believes the hard drive is bad.  It appears Best Buy never validated the hard drive nor partitions.

- Returned laptop to Best Buy Geek Squad for diagnostic and installation of the Sony Recovery Disks.  Geek Squad rep says it will be at least 3-5 days and they will run another diagnostic to see if the replacement hard drive is bad 'that sometimes happens'.  I do not know what, if any, diagnostic was accomplished on the laptop upon return to the store.

SUMMARY:  Poor records; incomplete work (I would expect them to check the hard drive and boot the system before returning to me);  laptop appears to hand off to different technicians without good notes.
