"Marvon Construction built our garage last fall. We are so happy with it, we had them build a deck for us this summer. Reuben met with us several times for the design and to show us examples and discuss the features of the composite product. He met our requests and offered a few suggestions. Our carpenters were friendly and very conscientious with our property. When we found water damage from the previous deck, they offered a solution and added it to the project. Throughout the project, they offered great communication regarding the status, next steps, coordination with our other contractor, and the estimated completion date. They finished the deck on schedule, and it exceeds our expectations."

"I needed new wooden steps. I decided to do a small deck and steps. Estimate was reasonable. They showed up on time and were very courteous. Went beyond and were helpful and honest. Very happy with the result."

"We were looking for contractors and when we could finally got someone to come look at the project they either never followed up or didnt think they could do it. I reached out to James because he helped a client of mine and they were very pleased with his work. The project was completed on time and at a very fair price. The communication was good, overall I was very impressed and excited James took care of us."

"After talking to a few other contractors, we decided to hire Kodiak to gut and remodel our kitchen. Working with Mike, Jared, and Ryan couldn't have been a better experience for this generally confused and anxious home owner who'd never hired out for something like this before. Mike was great on the business side, and stuck to what he said, and was very direct and upfront about what was and wasn't feasible, and he and Rob from Cabinet Land put together a great looking floor plan that works much better for us. Jared and Ryan were on time every day, bright eyed, bushy tailed, and ready to go without complaint or excuse. They were very easy to discuss the project with, and were quick to ask questions instead of assuming. They were also very gracious in letting me; the curious, interested, and probably at times obnoxious homeowner be curious, interested, and at times, probably obnoxious. Jared also installed ridge vents in my attic, and a new back storm door. All that being said, I couldn't be happier with Kodiak and their work, and will definitely hire them for future projects."

"2nd Street Painting just completed painting our 1904 two story home in Tolono, IL.  My wife and I are very pleased with the quality of the finished product provided by Nate, Clayton and the crew. As a recently retired Architect, I am very conscious of the requirements and skills needed by painters and other trades.  From the beginning, I was impressed.  Nate and 2 other firms came to my house to prepare bids for the work.  Only Nate prepared a detailed two page typed bid that made it clear what work would be done and included the warrantee on the work.  The other bidders hand scribbled little more that a price. I also noticed other important considerations in picking a quality painting company for your work: Preparation (i.e. scraping) is the most important part of a good paint job and it was done very well by the crew. The painters used a high quality paint and primer, not a lower quality "contractor grade" paint. The painters showed up on time and didn't take "extended" breaks at lunch or during the day. The worksite was well organized and cleaned up at the end of the day. The painters work well with carpenters who were repairing siding and trim ahead of them.  In general, we could have been more pleased with 2nd Street Painting and we are happy to recommend them to others."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Professionals ensure precise alignment and durability, critical for structural integrity.

While it is possible to build a wooden carport yourself, especially if you are skilled in carpentry, professional construction is recommended. Professionals ensure structural integrity, proper anchoring, correct alignment, and the use of quality materials for a stable and durable result.

A few signs that you need a new door frame include:

  • The door no longer fits properly in its frame and sticks or scrapes.

  • You notice cracks, holes, or rotting.

  • You feel a draft coming from around the door when it’s closed.

  • You find yourself frequently needing to make repairs.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
