"I have been looking for a reasonably priced generator repair company for some time. The person who answered the phone was extremely courteous and seemed to go out of her way to help me with my service needs. Within 30 minutes the owner called back and based on my description of the problem was able to suggest a simple fix over the phone that I could do and which solved my problem. I will definitely call them for all my future needs."

"Wasn’t positive that a battery was needed until they arrived to do the oil change so had to wait a couple of days until new battery arrived but they came back as soon as it did and finished everything they promised. I very satisfied with the work and would hire them again without hesitation"

"I'm very satisfied with his work. I had used him for 16 years and I had him install two different generators. I never had any problems at all and he is very responsive; that is why I have recommended him before."

"We hired Alex to install can lights in our dining room. The price was extremely reasonable and they were able to fit us in within a week of when we received their quote. They arrived promptly, installed in a couple hours and had the room as clean as it was when they arrived. We plan on using Power Electric again to upgrade our fuse box and also to hang more lights. Very pleased with the overall experience. Highly recommend!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.

While the rating will tell you how many watts the refrigerator needs at the peak of its cycle, it requires additional wattage to start. At the bare minimum, you’ll need a 1,500-watt generator to get the fridge up and running after a blackout. A 2,000-watt generator should be sufficient for most home refrigerators.

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

Generators are usually sized by running watts and starting watts. Ideally, you’ll want a generator that can offer both the necessary running watts and starting watts for everything you need to power without going beyond 90% of its capacity. Calculate your home’s electrical load based on the breakers in your home or adding up the appliance and lighting needs of connected rooms.
