GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, a standard safety addition to home power outlets. In rooms where moisture is more likely, like the bathroom and kitchen, GFCI outlets stop the current when certain kinds of shorts are detected, preventing shocks. Both GFCI and the similar AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are polarized and have clear indicators on the receptacle where hot wiring should go.

A ground wire is not required for GFCI to work. A ground is a third wire in an outlet in addition to the live and neutral wires. It serves as an escape conduit for electricity in case of a short circuit. If a ground wire is present, installers should connect it to the appropriate terminal. Otherwise, a GFCI will work fine without it.

Burnt outlets can be caused by things such as faulty wiring, loose connections, or a circuit overload—and yes, they are extremely dangerous. If you notice your outlet is hot or has burn marks, you should shut off the power to it from the circuit breaker and immediately call an electrician.
