A window AC unit is not completely silent. You’ll hear the sound of air blowing, and if you put your ear right up next to the unit, you may hear a slight hiss or gurgle as the refrigerant flows through the system. The outdoor portions of air conditioners are designed to weather the rain, so you don’t need to worry about it. An awning or roof will help protect them from snow or falling debris, which can do more damage. This is true of both window AC and outdoor units for larger systems.

A home AC unit provides anywhere from one-half to five tons of cooling and requires approximately two to four pounds of refrigerant per ton of cooling. At approximately five to 10 minutes to fill one pound of refrigerant, a home that requires three tons of cooling will take about six to 12 pounds of refrigerant and approximately 30 minutes to two hours to completely recharge the unit.

Some HVAC systems tend to use R410A refrigerant, although if you have an older model it may be using R22. R22 is banned due to its harmful environmental and health impacts, and it is a sign that your AC unit is old enough to consider a replacement and the significant efficiency gains that could come with it.
