"Overall it went well. The only thing I would say is that initially they wanted to use a part from an entire faucet combo (cost about $168) when eventually the part could be purchased seperately for about $40.  But I asked questions and they accommodated by going pick up the part at home depot.  That was very helpful as we were able to get all the work done that day.  Jennifer was great to work with....very responsive and timely follow up.

"
The old sidewalk along the north side of our building was pooling rain water along the edge of the neighbor's property alongside her window well.  During downpours water would invade the window well and swamp the drain, causing well to fill above window  frame and into basement---causing damage.  Our condo building was built 1929, and the neighbor's house in 2006.  The neighbor wanted us to redo our sidewalk, whereas we felt we were there first, and she should replace the wedge brick sides of her window well.  Nevertheless, there was no doubt that her window well was flooding because of excess rain water from our property.  The neighbor offered to pay half the replacement of our entire back/rear sidewalk complex, and we would pay the other half.  We accepted.  THIS IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF COOPERATION BETWEEN NEIGHBORS TO AVOID FRICTION.
The neighbor supplied one bid, and we supplied two others (including KAT CONSTRUCTION).  The neighbor had the final say as to which option to pick.  KAT was the only company to recommend the use of a French drain, and the neighbor, who already had such a drain on the other side of her property, liked the idea.
EXPLANATION $ RESULTS: The 4-inch COREX drainage pipe is flexible, with slits cut in it around the circumference.  During downpours, water no longer builds up or pools along the edge of our sidewalk. Instead, it drains into the ditch and is drawn by the pipe toward the catch basin at the rear of our main building.  The neighbor has reported no flooding since construction, and our own building's exterior drains under the stairs are no longer overwhelmed either.  We had a rather dry winter and spring/summer, without any downpours until recently.  That is why we waited to file our report until now, after we have had sufficient storms to test the system.  An excellent solution!! We strongly recommend both this option and this contractor."

"Communication was perfect. Response and e-mailing was instant. The professional consultation was very productive; saving around 3 grand choosing very good engineering wood over wood floor. First day his crew took care of my old glue-down smelly carpets in half a day. He did all the impressive trim and molding works. Some of work was not in the contract. Painting was more impressive. I did not have to move any furniture which I was holding against the project the most. One day I came back from work, all the painting was done and all the picture fames were back on the wall like magic. He seems to have more big than small jobs but he took care of my project very smoothly. Especially his workers seemed happy in this economy. My wife was happy. My referral (my sister-8 door replacement) is happy. I am happy."

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

Adding windows to a house is expensive. Budget roughly $5,800 to add a single window, and double or triple that to add two or three. In some cases, adding a single window can exceed $20,000, depending on the type of exterior wall, the size of the window, the type of window, local permit costs, and other factors.

The entire window replacement process, from the initial consultation to the final installation, typically takes between four and 15 weeks. This timeline accounts for measuring appointments, ordering, and manufacturing. On the day of the job, the physical installation takes about 30 minutes to two hours per window. A full-house replacement can take one to three days to complete. Factors that can extend this timeline include the total number of windows, custom sizes, complex window types, second-story installations, and any necessary repairs to existing window frames or openings.

A good U-factor for windows is 0.30 or lower, but they can range from 0.20 to 1.20. A general rule of thumb when it comes to the U-factor is that the lower, the better.

The average cost to install an egress window is approximately $3,900, with a typical range between $2,500 and $5,300, though costs can be higher. The final price is influenced by several factors, including the window's size, type, material, and glass quality. Other variables include labor costs, location, excavation needs, and whether permits or a structural engineer consultation are required. The price of the window itself often depends on the number of panes:

  • Single-pane: $100–$400

  • Double-pane: $200–$500

  • Triple-pane: $300–$800

Additional features like window wells or covers will also increase the total project cost. It is advisable to obtain multiple quotes from professionals to get a comprehensive understanding of the expenses for your specific project.

Yes, you can always make an existing window bigger, but the job complexity varies widely depending on the location of the window and the framing around it. Exterior walls are always load-bearing, so making windows wider will require structural changes that make for a more complex but doable project. Making windows taller often won’t require structural changes.
