Customers say: True professional

"MNM did an excellent job hanging wallpaper in our nursery. The wallpaper looks terrific and there were some difficult parts to the job. MNM was easy to deal with at a reasonable price and handled everything very well. I would hire them again."

What we do: drywall repair/replacement, remove wallpaper, hang wallpaper, spray cabinets, staining, epoxy floors, and full interior/exterior repaints. We go through the extra steps for the best results. I have been in this trade for 15 years, but just recently started a company of my own.

"Jason, the owner, responded to my initial voicemail inquiry promptly. He took on a wallpaper removal/painting job (some of which was on 19 foot high walls) that other painters were afraid to take on. He gave us different options of services at several pricepoints, which was very helpful. Jason was knowledgable and helpful and answered all of our questions and it was great that he was very willing to use no- or low-VOC paints. The service was started on time and finished on time. Our walls look great and using the services of Chicagoland Precision Painting was money well spent."

"Ken Turner Custom Painting beautifully restored almost the entire interior of my house. I chose this company because of the high ratings the company has received on Angie's List, and because the company removes wallpaper, which is no longer commonplace among painting contractors. The painters worked diligently and quietly and put in long hours when necessary to stay on schedule. l highly recommend this business, as the owner is very focused on customer satisfaction. I have already reserved time with them for another project in the spring."

Wallpapering questions, answered by experts

To layer wallpaper over wallpaper, inspect your existing wallpaper for problem areas. Damaged wallpaper should not be covered. If it’s okay to proceed, prep by turning off the electricity and removing any outlet and switch covers. Dust your walls and lightly rinse them to prevent the existing paper from peeling. Apply primer, then apply your new wallpaper.

Wallpaper lasts an average of around 15 years, but there is some variance. The type of wallpaper matters, as vinyl wallpaper tends to last the longest—sometimes 20 years or more—while a peel-and-stick wallpaper, which is the easiest to install for DIYers, will usually only last for around five years. Exposure to high humidity, smoke, and UV rays from sunlight can also limit the lifespan of your wallpaper, as can heavy traffic in the installation area.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is designed to be removed without damaging walls, making it a good choice for renters or temporary design changes. However, damage to paint or drywall can occur under certain conditions. To prevent issues, the wall surface must be properly prepared before application—it should be clean, smooth, dry, and correctly primed or painted. Applying wallpaper to a freshly painted surface can cause the paint to peel off during removal. Additionally, removing the wallpaper too quickly or aggressively can also cause damage. For best results, always follow the manufacturer's instructions for both application and removal.

The two most common reasons wallpaper does not stick are a lack of preparation and improper adhesive. Be sure to use the wallpaper paste designed for the type of paper you choose. Before beginning your project, make sure the walls are clean and free of dust, grease, and oils.

No, you don’t always have to remove old wallpaper before applying a new layer. However, you should pull off the existing wallpaper if it’s cracked, peeling, or in poor condition. We’d also recommend against putting wallpaper over textured or dark-colored wallpaper because the old layer may be visible through the new one. In addition, if you try to hang new wallpaper over vinyl-coated wallpaper, the adhesive might not stick properly.
