If you want to replace your home's existing underground downspout, you have options. One is to connect a rain barrel to the downspout. During a storm, water travels from the downspout into the barrel. You can then use the water to irrigate your garden or lawn. 

Another option is to install a downspout extension above ground. The extension will direct water away from your home, but potentially not as far away as an underground system.

Because gutters are consistently exposed to elements like water and humidity, any paint applied to them will have a shorter life span than other exterior home features, like siding and shutters. In general, painted gutters will need to be touched up or completely repainted every 5 to 10 years, though you may get a couple extra years with regular care and maintenance.

While gutter guards offer significant advantages, they also have some drawbacks—namely, they don't completely eliminate the need for cleaning, and certain objects (like mold or large debris) can still damage your roof. If they're installed improperly, they can void the roof warranty, and heavy guards could even damage your roof fascia or roof material itself. Several options for hanging Christmas lights won't damage gutters. Using shingle clips avoids any hardware contact with them, and using plastic gutter clips minimizes the likelihood of scratching gutters. Remember not to rest a ladder, especially a metal one, against the gutters, and use a ladder stand-off device or stabilizer if you need to use an extension ladder. 

While they reduce debris buildup, ice dams may still form without proper attic insulation and ventilation.
