"It went great. When I contacted the company on a Friday, the owner, Scott Nelson, returned my call right away. Though they couldn't fit me in for a regular service call for another 3 weeks, Nelson agreed to come by that next Monday and give me an assessment and estimate about the electrical panel. He said if the fuse issue was something quick to fix, he would try to take of it. Nelson arrived on time on Monday and was able to both give me an assessment (of what it would cost to upgrade my panel from 20 to 30) as well as assure me that, right now, everything was fine except that something was triggering the arc fault circuit and that needed looking at. Luckily, one of the service calls that day had cancelled so about 2 hours later, Ben and Eric came over to diagnose and fix the problem. They were friendly yet professional and though it took some time to figure out what was tripping the circuit, they were able to do so and now I have working lights at the top of the stairs and on the front porch. I really appreciated how both Scott Nelson and his workers, Ben and Eric, explained things to me and they handled my big, friendly dogs well. I will definitely be using Scott Nelson Electric in the future for any electrical needs."

"Amp Electric and the owner, Allin, is absolutely top rate. Not only did they have fair pricing and complete great work but the customer service was above and beyond. Allin was friendly, professional and a great communicator. He took the time to walk us through the process so we understood the work he would do and answered all our questions patiently throughout. We will always reach out to him with any future electrical needs. Without any reservations I would recommend Amp Electric!"

"Blazer Electric was excellent. They installed a new outlet in my kitchen with causing minimal mess since this was a brand new outlet so I could install an oven range hood. They used all the PPE precautions and were pretty thorough and polite. I will definitely have them do my future electrical work when needed."

"EddieWas through and easy to work with. The work was excellent and Eddie of Ferrer Electric consulted with the company who was installing industrial fans to be sure that all of their requirements for the electrical outlets were met This was a complicated install as it was on the ceiling of a barn which required a lift Eddie also followed up on his work to be sure all was done correctly I would hire him again and will recommend Ferrer Electric to my friends Sue Lutz"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The National Fire Protection Association reports that almost half of reported electrical fires are caused by electrical distribution and lighting equipment. The main culprit behind these fires is often frayed, worn, or faulty wiring, particularly in closed-off and concealed areas like attics, where fires can start and burn undetected for long periods.

It wouldn’t be abnormal to view all wiring as simply wiring, but wiring has different gauges and can handle different loads. When you’re wiring for 240V, you need wire that is rated at least 240V, but honestly it’s better to spend a little more and just buy 300V wiring. This ensures a margin of safety in case the wiring gets overloaded.

Leaving lights on raises the electric bill, but not as much as having high-wattage light bulbs. The best way to save on electric costs is to swap your light bulbs to LED or CFL bulbs that use far fewer watts. You can also use smart lights and light switches to control usage via a smartphone or voice-controlled device.

You can test an electric fence with a multimeter, but you’ll need to set the multimeter to the correct voltage measurement—such as alternative current (AC) or direct current (DC) and range—depending on your fence. You can find the voltage type and range in the fence’s user manual.

While not always necessary, wiring your circuit breaker in a certain way can ease both the installation process and use afterward. For starters, you’ll need to install the electrical panel so that the main service knockout aligns with the cable conduit. If they aren’t aligned, you may not have sufficient working space to finish running the wires. Using cable trays, on the other hand, gives you a bit more freedom to and flexibility in where and which direction you install the wires. At the end of the day, the power flow will be the same whether the cords run up or down.
