"Within 5 minutes after Roy walked in, I knew I was speaking with an expert. He talked me out of wasting money on what I wanted (getting rid of boiler and replying on furnace) telling me about how everyone in the city during -40 degree nights was will freeze and if I keep the boiler I'll be comfy. He also talked me out of choosing a heat pump, saying in Chicago it will cause problems in the dead of winter and then I'll be out of luck. Initial estimate was only to replace the 60 year oil leaky boiler and 40 year old loud AC and furnace. Came in, did the work quickly, and when we were doing final inspection he pointed out where my last remaining original furnace was having problems. Gave me a great price to just get the the last furnace and AC done (AC was 40 years old). I know they won't be the cheapest but if you want someone you can trust who will guide you with his 30 years of experience and teach you the finer details of heating and cooling while delivering quality work, go with Porterhouse. I won't trust anyone else."

Customers say: Quality work

"Jeff and Max did an amazing job in our home, and I would highly recommend them. We trusted them enough to given them keys so they could work whenever they had the time. We provided most of the materials, except for specific items they needed. We initially hired them to renovate 2 bathrooms, but when we realized how knowledgeable Jeff was, we had him work on other projects as well. When you hire this team, you get it all. They can do the plumbing, tile work, electrical work, etc and you don't need to hire more contractors. That's a HUGE bonus! They were very respectful of our home, and protected our wood floors and carpet with high quality materials for the entire time they were working on the house. They are VERY clean and always made sure they vacuumed and cleaned the area before they left for the day. Plus, we didn't need to get a dumpster like other contractors asked for. They were able to get the job done well without constant phone calls asking questions. Only when really necessary did Jeff text me, which was my preferred form of communication. Other than that, they quietly did their work without fuss. They know what they're doing, and do it well. They completed the projects when promised and their prices were really great too. Excellent work!!!"

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

Mid-century modern architecture was a popular home style throughout the U.S. from the 1950s to 1970s. Most homes feature a wide and symmetrical floor plan with low-sloped roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows. Its minimalism and balanced appearance are back on the home style scene, particularly when maximizing sunlight, airflow, and a blend with the home's natural surroundings.

The longest part of building a custom home is the design phase. It takes multiple professionals and a ton of work to bring your vision for your dream home to life while sticking to a homebuilding budget and also ensuring everything is built to code. Expect the design phase for a custom home build to take six months to a year.

While it’s never too early to start planning for a major home improvement project like a home addition, give yourself at least a month or two to plan and design your addition, find a contractor, and get the permits in order. For larger projects like a second-story addition that require designing with an architect, plan on three to four months of preparation.

You can draw your own house plans using three-dimensional modeling software, but in most cases, you’ll need an architect to draw up the final plans. Architects understand local building regulations and requirements, so their plans will be necessary for getting permits approved, and they’ll also ensure your home is structurally sound. DIY house plans can be a good place to start to help visualize your project, but you should always defer to a professional before trying to proceed with the project.

Yes, many providers offer design consultations to create unique structures. Confirm with your contractor.
