"Rick did an excellent job I needed lights added to above a new shower and he also moved an outlet from one side of the wall to the other and added two switches to it. Also added a new outlet on another wall. Everything is working well. I would hire again, which is probably the greatest compliment I can give him."

"The problem turned out to be a burned out small electric door switch. I believe the price was way too expensive for the service performed and the price of the door switch. What more can I say? It got done."

I am a jack of trades independent contractor/ handyman with 10+ years experience. I am not a licensed plumber, licensed electrician, or licensed roofer. With that said it's easier to just tell you the things that I don't do. I do not do drain work, I do not replace electrical lines or panel boxes, I do not replace plumbing lines which includes water and gas, and I do not replace roofs. Aside from that I can do everything else, and have the tools to do so.

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Kewanee’s cold winters and humid summers require weatherproofing and moisture-resistant materials for electrical projects, especially in basements or outdoor spaces. Heavy rain and snow can strain overhead wiring, so schedule major outdoor work in milder seasons. Whole-house surge protection is recommended due to frequent thunderstorms, and underground service lines can help minimize disruptions from severe weather common in this region of Illinois.

Helpful?

For electrical maintenance in Kewanee, keep a non-contact voltage tester, digital multimeter, and GFCI outlet tester for basic safety checks. Stock up on weatherproof wire nuts, electrical tape rated for temperature swings, and moisture-resistant boxes for basements. Outdoor-rated extension cords, surge protectors, spare GFCI outlets, extra circuit breakers, and silicone caulk for sealing outdoor boxes are also smart additions for year-round preparedness.

Helpful?

To make your Kewanee home safer, install tamper-resistant outlets and AFCI breakers to reduce shock and fire risks. Use sliding covers or plug protectors in older homes, and secure electrical panels with locks. For pet safety, protect exposed wiring with conduit, especially outdoors, and use GFCI outlets near grooming areas. Good lighting in play spaces and outdoor areas helps prevent accidents for both children and pets.

Helpful?

When hiring electrical contractors in Kewanee, look for pros with proven experience in local home wiring, especially with older systems common in the area. Confirm they’re insured and bonded, and ask for written estimates that clearly outline permit requirements. Prioritize those familiar with Kewanee’s inspection process and who can provide local references. Clear communication and knowledge of local codes help ensure a safe, code-compliant project.

Helpful?

In Kewanee, overloading circuits with space heaters during winter or using indoor-rated extension cords outside can quickly wear out your electrical system. Allowing moisture to accumulate near outlets, skipping regular GFCI testing, or blocking access to basement panels can cause long-term issues. Avoid running cords under rugs and always cover outdoor equipment in winter to help preserve your home’s electrical wiring and components.
