Jarvis electric is a local family owned and operated business. We take pride in performing quality electric work at a reasonable price. We have over twenty years of experience in the electrical field. Honesty and integrity are two qualities we believe help to build a successful business. At Jarvis Electric we are building relationships, one job at a time. Update: We are currently not servicing East St. Louis.

"Jarvis Electric did all of the electric for our new build and has come back to add additional items that we have added since we have been in the home. Super responsive and quick to complete all requested work. Top notch service. Extremely reasonable price. I appreciate that they always keep a clean worksite and never leave a mess, even if coming back the next day to finish a job. I have not only used them for my home but referred them to my mom and dad as well when they needed work done. Great company with great people and really easy to deal with. They truly went above and beyond."

We are a small family-owned company that offers great service at a reasonable price. We are very proud of our work & it shows. We are on time and ready for our appointments. We always maintain a good working relationship with local inspectors and utilities to keep the projects going smooth. We are a member of the (IAEI) International association of electrical inspectors. For 29 years, Bates Electric, Inc. Has proudly served the St. Louis Metro area and surrounding areas. Please contact us to speak with one of our Customer Service Specialists for service rates. ALL OF OUR TECHNICIANS ARE LICENSED, BONDED, AND DEPARTMENT OF LABOR CERTIFIED.

"Worst electric company - seriously. Im a former employee of 6 years. I ended up leaving the company after they refused to pay me for work I had performed. It was a mere 450$ but that is not the point. They are one of the lowest paying companies (at least while I was there) and they are VERY unsafe. I was instructed by Andy Bates (co ceo) to perform several service changes without Ameren disconnecting their power coming into the home - meaning I put my life in danger working on linemans work without proper PPE and violated OSHA policies. They send second year apprentices to do service call work because they make far less money but they charge the same rate (I was one of them). So there is a good chance you get someone still in training showing up at your house to perform work. Please support an honest business and dont feed these greedy idiots. They still owe me 450$!!"

"AMF installed two electrical outlets. The first time I attempted to use them, neither worked. I went to some trouble to check the circuit breaker and both sub panels, the GFIs on both outlets, and even asked a friend with a voltage tester to check them. All signs indicated that no power was reaching the outlets. Finally, I called AMF who told me to check the GFIs on the outlets. So I checked them again. Thereafter, AMF sent an electrician who discovered that there was a “hidden additional GFI” (electrician’s words, not mine) on the side of one of the subpanels that affected none of the other circuits in the breaker— *only* the two outlets that had been installed by AMF. Had the outlets not been installed by AMF or had the AMF electrician who installed them advised me that they were controlled by a “hidden additional GFI,” then this would have been my misfortune and I would’ve been responsible for the charges associated with it. But AMF did install the outlets and they were therefore AMF’s responsibility. Nevertheless, I paid $160 for 20 minutes of an AMF electrician’s time to come to my house. When I called and asked the owner to stand behind his company’s work, offering to pay part of the bill even though it was absolutely not my responsibility, he told me that $160 is AMF’s “minimum.” End of story. I understand that AMF has an excellent reputation but I can’t attest to it given that the first and only time I tried to use those outlets, they didn’t work. The fact that the company charged me $160 for its own mistake added insult to injury."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can install a ceiling fan where there is already a light fixture. The electrical wiring needed to install a ceiling fan is similar to that of a light fixture. Before you make the swap, consider whether you need an extension rod and whether your ceiling is on an angle. You will need a fan-rated electrical box to ensure that your ceiling is sturdy enough to handle a spinning fan.

Ceiling fans require periodic cleaning of blades to avoid dust accumulation, checking screws and connections for firmness, and occasional lubrication for components, keeping the fan running smoothly and quietly over time.

The ceiling box should have an inscription stating that it supports the operation of the ceiling fan. If it’s not included, you should purchase a fan-rated junction box and a fan brace so you can install the box between joists, where it’ll provide the most support for the fan’s weight.

If you’re replacing an old fixture with a ceiling fan, you usually won’t need a permit, but if your electrician runs new wiring for the fixture, you likely will need a permit. Building permits are necessary in most municipalities if you’re making changes to your electrical system, so even if you have partial wiring run to the area and need new wiring installed for added functionality, you’ll probably need a permit. Your electrician should be able to let you know if you need one, and they’ll typically file the paperwork for you.

It’s possible to install your own ceiling fans if you’re replacing an existing one. This work doesn’t require a permit and technically doesn’t necessitate a certified electrician, but it’s still a good idea to hire one. There’s always a safety risk when working with electrical components, even if you shut the power off at the breaker. If you’re installing a new ceiling fan where there currently isn’t a fixture, you will need a licensed electrician to run the new wiring and pull permits for the work.
