The timeline was the biggest problem. The time it took contractor to finish the project was nearly 2.5 months from start to (almost) finish, with a single bathroom in the house. During this time, there were 2 holidays (Christmas and New Year's) and some days of inclement weather which would have prevented anyone from traveling (~3 in all). However, there was one entire week that I was on travel and returned to find zero progress had been made in that amount of time. The original estimate was $2,500 for labor only for the bathroom. There were additional items that surfaced throughout the renovation which added scope to the project that increased the labor to nearly $3,700. I provided all material for the project. Contractor requested milestone payments in advance of work being completed, to include final payment, which was made with promise from Contractor that he would return to fix minor "nit-pick" items, which never did take place. I have had to perform those items myself. Contractor would set tools in bathtub and on top of porcelain toilet, which resulted in scratches in both. In retrospect I would have requested him to place pads down. Contractor also did not lay down anything to protect the floors in the house from outside elements that were brought in on his boots (snow/rain), and that was then mixed with debris and dust from the construction. This made it extremely difficult to clean the floors. Overall, the bathroom looks nice. When looking in detail, however, once can see where craftsmanship/attention to detail is lacking due to a rush to complete the project.
Description of Work: Provider ripped out old (pink) tile from bathroom down to studs. Tore out flooring, hauled away debris, installed new shower handle and shower head (included raising both), drywalled the bathroom, mud, taped painted, installed new tub, vanity, tile floor and shower as well as wainscoting, installed exhaust fan and light in shower surround.

We dealt with Tom Earle. It was not as good as we have liked, but it was good enough. I did not think that they were working half hours. All of the contractors worked similarly. They come in about 9 o’clock and leave at 3:04 everyday. There were only few exceptions when we started to complain. Then, in the beginning they had a couple of people here. Sometimes it had been three, and then many days, they used to have one person. When we asked them what happened, they said they were working on other jobs too. So, it is a small company, but then I guess they just want to have as many contracts as possible so at times they were spread kind of thin. That prolonged the construction project. It took longer than originally planned. The pricing was pretty good. I saw a couple of other contractors, and theirs came out pretty good. I am not exactly sure about the quality of their work because it is hard for me to compare someone else because we have not had such a large project, but I came to believe that there were situations where the quality could have been better because we asked them to redo a few things. So, of course after we started to pay more attention and complain about their quality then they kind of put more time into it or give it more attention. It is not something that I would consider automatic. It is okay. I am going to do the best I can. It seemed like if you do not complain, then, they will get away with whatever they could possibly get away with. That is the way I see it. I felt that maybe all the other contractors are not like this. I think there are exceptions. They do the best they can and there are also others who can do better, but they do not seem to do so unless you start complaining about it. They are a little bit like that. I thought they did finish okay. They were pretty good in listening to our needs and so with regards to responsiveness, they are pretty good. When you start talking about the allocation of resources and things like this, we were competing with his other projects. I do not know if responsiveness included that or not because the whole project stood up more than a month, even more than the hundred day week. We had previously worked with a smaller scale contractor and he would come here at the earliest as he could. He asked us when he could come in, and he told us that if he could come at 7:30 that that would be better. So, we told him to come at 8. A lot of times he would stay and work until like 5 or 6 until we need to eat dinner. A lot of times he would also come in on weekends on work. For Good Neighbors, they are definitely not like that. They would come in around 9 o’clock sometimes even later or until we ask where they are. The project has been delayed and they did not come in. Maybe they have longer drives that they had to do and they leave early too. A couple times, when we really complained a lot, then they brought some people in over the weekend. Those guys came in voluntarily to work I guess because they were pretty conscientious. They are subcontractors to Good Neighbors. When we started complaining, they came in over a few times over the weekend just to catch up. If that is the hours, they would say they were punctual because they were showing up at time they were suppose to show up, but from our perspective, I go to work at 8 in the morning and come home at 5; you are not doing the same. They were pretty professional. I would have to say that in all situations that they handled themselves pretty professionally. What we have to do is that if we are going to use them in the future, we really have to manage them which I do not think that we should need to do quite to the detail of our level that I think we need to do. They are professional in working on the project, getting the details, and telling us what is going on. Those type of situations, but we would definitely want to enforce the amount of time. If they say they could finish this in eight weeks, then we would expect them to get done in eight weeks and not 50% longer. We would have to manage it from a time perspective a lot closer. If that is the case, I would reuse them. I think from their perspective, they are putting themselves in this situation purposely because they need to have the work like okay I have finished one place; I do not want to have a slack time. I just want to work and work all the time. In order to do that, they accept projects which may overlap. When they started ours, they were actually finishing up on the other one. Then, something happened with the other project that they could not finish because of late deliver or something was not delivered as expected or they had to return it. Things like this. When they were supposed to start on ours full-time, they were not able to do that because they were still working on this other project. When I look at their point of view to manage your business, they have to do that, but then the customer would suffer like us. They need to hire more people. I guess they trust the people they work with. They do not have to watch over them. I think they work with their subcontractors and other people. They do have their own people but not many, one or two. The subcontractors that they hire, I think they trust them because they have special skills that they do not have. They come and do the work. Their relationship with their contractors that I do not know if they can just hire based on their need at the time and then let the people go when they are able to handle. I think they do not want temporary help. They want to have a long-term relationship with their contractors. I empathize with them because I understand the situation they are in, but at the same time, we are their customers. We are selfish about our own project. So, we want complete attention from them which they are not able to give us.

We are very happy with the work Good Neighbors did remodeling our small decades-old kitchen. As part of the remodel we had them install double pocket doors in a supporting wall between the kitchen and an adjoining bedroom. We also had them incorporate most of a hall closet into the kitchen space. With these two changes they were able to comfortably add an island and more than double our counter space. All the work except plumbing and electrical was done by the very competent and trustworthy crew of Chris and Caleb, who answered all of our questions and gave very helpful advice and generally kept the workspace clean. The quality of work is good to excellent. Tom, one of the owners, came up with a wonderful layout for the wall tile. The sub-contractor doing the small amount of plumbing was very good. The electrical work included replacing the main panel, running all new electric lines, and installing both "can" lights and pendant lights. This subcontractor did excellent work and correctly diagnosed a line problem on Ameren's end that had plagued us with dimming lights for years when we ran appliances--this was fixed for free after they called. Unfortunately the electricians worked evenings and weekends with almost no advance notice; we were told by Good Neighbors that this was not their usual contractor. Regardless, everything turned out great and all inspections were passed with no problems. How the project progressed: After a quick initial visit from Steve (the other owner), he brought in Joanne Conley from Henry Plumbing (also listed on Angie's list) who did the actual kitchen design and helped us select all the materials and cabinets. Her attention to detail was amazing, and she immediately noted one hidden problem (easily solved) that neither Steve nor us had noticed. We definitely give her an "A". Joanne then referred us to the appliance company. She contracted the countertop installer. After that Tom, Chris, and Caleb took over, with us making sure to "touch base" every day or two. The project was completed within budget and ran about two weeks over the projected six weeks. Besides a couple snow days, most of the delay was due to us deciding to change the location of the island and its overhead pendant lights well into the remodel (and after the ceiling had been painted). The fact that Good Neighbors would do this for us so late in the game without any resistance speaks very highly of their desire to please their customers.
Description of Work: Full kitchen remodel: demo, some roughing in, ceramic floor tile and wall/backsplash tile, cabinet and island installation and trim work including crown molding, painting, removal of supporting wall and installation of pocket doors. Plumbing and all-new electrical wiring/lighting were subcontracted and are included in the "approximate cost of service" amount.

Our kitchen was ugly and barely working. We went to Angie's List and hired Good Neighbors, LLC for a previous job and we hired them again and they gave us an outstanding kitchen remodel. Good Neighbors had previously done a master bath remodel for us in 2012, which we love! So when it came time to update and remodel our outdated 30 year old kitchen, we again hired Good Neighbors to do the kitchen remodel. They gave us a price, they gave us a finish date and they finished within budget and they finished on time. Impressive! Our kitchen was a complete demolish from the ceiling to the floor. We installed new cabinets, new appliances, new lights, granite counter tops and updated the electrical service and the plumbing. We did a lot. Our kitchen, as with many older home remodels came with several surprises once the work started. However, Good Neighbors was able to handle the required fixes flawlessly and perfectly. Most importantly, we are thrilled with the end result. Even the building insectors complimented their work. One point worth mentioning, which we really appreciated, was the fact that the Good Neighbors personnel, Tom, Chris and Caleb showed up on time, worked hard all day and cleaned up every night. They never let us down, never left us hanging nor left us a mess to clean up. The finished kitchen is even better than we had imangined. Good Neighbors is worth of a glowing recommendation from us and we recommend them for any interior remodel and proudly give them an A.
Description of Work: Our kitchen was a 30+ year old kitchen that needed to be brought into this century. The cabinets were ugly, the formica counter tops were less than new, the appliances were old and worked sometimes. Everything was old and something needed to be done. So we decided to remodel and update everything.

Initial phone call went well. Steve Schaaf showed up as agreed to look and estimate and said he would send an estimate via email in five days. Five days came and went. After I contacted him again, he wrote back and said: "...thank you for the nice visit last week. We would be doing you a dis-service by removing your bedroom wall this time of the year . We are also booked to well after the first of the year . We certainly understand if you wish to contact someone else, otherwise if you wish to talk again next spring please give us a call. Our sincere best regards, Steve/Goodneighbors ." I can understand if a contractor is too busy to take on new work, but I was a little perturbed that he did not bother to estimate the job. It gives me the impression that didn't consider it lucrative enough to bother with.

They came next day with a crew and removed washer/dryer to make accessible for repairs. Repairs were completed on following day. Called Good Neighbors to ask them to re-install washer/dryer. Tom and crew of two came out next morning and completed re-installation. Very quick service, good work, fair price.
Description of Work: Good Neighbors originally constructed a laundry closet about one year ago. Recently had problems with dryer that required removal of stacked washer/dryer from very tight quarters. Couldn't move on our own, so called Good Neighbors to see if they could help.

We found Good Neighbors through Angie's List in January. They had outstanding recommendations from previous customers on the website and we are a very happy and very satisfied customer. We had our 30 year old master bathroom gutted and we replaced everything. Good Neighbors installed walls, ceiling, new tile floor, new cabinets, dual sinks, mirrors and replaced the old bathtub with an amazing, custom built, tiled shower. Steve, our first Good Neighbors contact and co-owner was on time, polite, knew the business of remodeling and was accurate with his estimate. Tom, the other co-owner and in charge of construction contacted us and explained the construction process. He addressed the problems we would encounter (dust, noise and storage of materials in our garage). Tom made us very aware of what was going to happen over the next 5 weeks, step by step. The project manager, Jeff, was the most polite man we have ever met. His associate Caleb was every bit as friendly. Every day they provided an explanation of what was going to occur that day and again they made every effort to contain the inevitable dust and the noise. The daily preparation and clean up was impressive. Every morning they laid canvas on the stairs, the hallway and the bedroom floor to keep the carpets clean. Every evening, the bathroom and adjoining bedroom were vacuumed, the mess cleaned up and the tools were stacked. Then they folded a put away the canvas and moved outside to clean up the construction debris from saws, tile cutters, etc. I have to tell everybody - We were impressed with the cleanup. The job grew from the original estimate as we had them add crown molding and repaint the master bedroom. Regarding a recommendation, I would not hesitate to have them do our next project and they probably will.

We heard of them through Solid Surface and my husband read about them on Angie's list. Now we see why they got great reviews. Their personality and the work they did was great. I would recommend them again if we have work done in the future. They have a friendly personality and they are also time efficient. Plus we had a back splash picked out but it did not go with our counter tops so we had to start over from scratch and they worked with us. Scott one of his workers was very nice too also so was Scott's son Bobby.
Description of Work: The services they performed was or tile/back splash for the kitchen.
IT went OK Tom is very good craftsman rest of crew is good but not having UNION traing they all have their own way of doing things and if you look real close you can see the different work. I would like to thank the members for their report. I would like to make one comment. As for union training, I do not know of any residential remodelers union. Our job is so diversified that we need to know how to do many different trades all on one job. It means the world to us that they are happy with the end result and we thank the members very much for the opportunity to serve them.
The crew was friendly, clean, and completed the work on time. They were skilled at plumbing, electrical, framing, drywall, ceramic tile, 6-panel doors, baseboard, and painting. They recommended a quality company for installing and refinishing the wood floor. They also recommended quality suppliers for bathroom fixtures and tile. Good Neighbors also advised us of a few optional upgrades or unexpected repairs, quoted a fair price, but left the decision totally up to us with no pressure. We appreciated their expertise in noticing some electrical upgrades that were necessary for safety's sake. When we added various tasks, such as removing all the chair-rail, they were always willing, and fair in their price. They always returned calls promptly, communicated regularly about their progress, and consistently kept the area clean. Good Neighbors was concerned about quality, and were friendly guys to have around. We would recommend them.

They renovated our basement. Overall, it went very well although it did take longer than we were originally quoted. I saw only couple of negative things. The company owner was very nice, although I think that possibly communication between him and my fiancé probably could have been a little bit better. He was really good about doing everything correctly and showing us anything that had to be changed. The length of the job was long. We were quoted four to six weeks for the whole renovation, but it took them roughly four months to complete the job. We did have one issue with our basement that they had to resubmit plans, but that may have only added a week and half. They were overall not quite as professional as what other contractors be.

The members were great to work for and we really enjoyed the job. Thank you both so much for the work. Because an unexpected popped up and we had to cut the main steal beam in the house for head clearance at the bottom of the stairs per county code, we were set back at least a month. That met getting an architect to draw up plans and resubmit them to the county, add a cement pier, an extra column, and a header. The shower kit they bought was missing parts, so I ordered and paid for a new parts kit and lost another week at the end of the project. After all was said and done we were a couple weeks late. Not bad in general. When we are using electrical and plumbing sub contractors per county code and partially governed by there schedules, time frames can fluctuate.

installed new lower cabinets, sinks, fixtures, dishwashers, disposals, gas range/oven, countertops, stove hoods, flooring and thresholds along with updated one kit, light fixture, and electrical switch/rec(s). the work is not cabinet maker quality but very good. there was a different guy on each side. one side has a solid oak threshold which has held up very well and the other side has a wood color plastic type which has taken quite a few hits, not a good one. they were quick, honest, did a good job and I would hire them again. the price does not reflect the items put in to the kitchens except lower cabinets, countertops and some kickplates. 0. went very well, very quickly. the work is not cabinet maker quality but very good.

This was a much better experience that we initially envisioned. My wife and I designed the overall kitchen plan ourselves. We chose Tom (Good Neighbors LLC) because he had such high marks here at Angie's List, but we got multiple quotes from regular commercial kitchen remodel firms as well. We believe we saved perhaps 10K and we were able to have exactly the materials, designs, appliances, and sources we wanted. We were very explicit about how we needed good communication, we wanted professional quality and professional installation, and Tom made certain that all happened, not only with him but also with his sub-contractors as well. The only "issue" we faced that wasn't anticipated was an issue from the St. Louis County inspector on some electrical issues, which cost the project a week's delay -and 4 days without any power to our house- but Tom was quite reasonable, and reimbursed us for lost food in the refrigerator as well as two nights we needed to spend in a local hotel. And my wife and I believe the delay was not his or his sub-contractor's fault! My wife and I are semi-retired, so we had the time to visit multiple locations to see and choose materials (granite for counter tops, tile for floor and walls, plumbing fixtures, ceiling fans, etc.). But Tom has a list of providers that we could start with if we wanted, and we found every provider on his list was professional and knowledgeable about his/her specific area or product line. (Many were effusive about Tom's professionalism and "quality" of craftsmanship when they would ask who was our general contractor. We believe Tom enjoys a very good reputation in the industry and area.) It is our experience and understanding that almost every job the size and complexity of a whole kitchen remodel will have some small changes as the project moves along. There were a couple of those on this project as well. But Tom was very reasonable and considerate, and when the change involved substantial increases in time or materials, we agreed to changes in the original contract that were fair and equitable. (Along those lines, Tom provided an easily understood written estimate for us to compare to our other bids, and clear time-lines established for payments along the way, as various milestones were reached.) Overall, we believe Tom and Good Neighbors LLC is a professional construction organization. He handled the complexities of this large remodel job very well. We liked him and the people he worked with. Communication was never strained, was always a key component of the work, and we believe we got exactly what we paid for, for a great price, and enjoyed the process as much as anyone can who has to live without their kitchen for 6 weeks!
Description of Work: Tom, both as our general contractor and installer, completed a kitchen remodel AND a complete re-wire of our house (formerly aluminum, now all copper). The galley kitchen work was extensive, from demolition to the studs, through re-wiring electrical -including low voltage under cab lighting- and all plumbing -including new kitchen sink placement-, to all new lighting, ceiling fan, and especially difficult floor tile and wall tile patterns. He was communicative, always answering questions and keeping us informed of the scheduled events to come. This was OUR kitchen design, and he was supportive and even offered suggestions when we asked for his opinion and/or experience. He uses excellent sub-contractors, and all the people involved were, like him, easy to get along with, professional, communicative, and very highly skilled. He has excellent resources for wholesale materials (such as tile, custom cabinets, etc.) but we also had no problem shopping for some things (appliances for instance) on our own and he was eager and well equipped to install them or use the materials in the remodel.

Upon first inspection Tom noticed a problem with the tile we had purchased. It didn't match in size or color from one tile to the next. We purchased new tile the same day and he came back and installed it over backer board the following day.
Description of Work: Tom removed carpeting and installed ceramic tile in our hall bathroom and closet. He was punctual and professional and did a very nice job. He works efficiently and our floor looks very good.
