"Jose is absolutely delightful to work with. He evaluated the deck and it's needs and followed through on every assessed item. I would hire him again when the need arises."

"Jason and his team were extraordinary, and I couldn't be happier with the work they did. He repaired our pergola by replacing warped posts as well as sanding and staining out deck. He went above and beyond expectations, anticipated any problems, and also was pro-active in the repairs. For instance, without us asking, he realized there was a structural flaw in how the developers mounted the pergola. Without worrying us with it (and without charging any extra), he fixed the structural flaw in order to insure its longer life. It is that kind of intelligence and forward-thinking that inspire trust, and I completed the project feeling very secure that the work is solid and long-lasting. It also looks great. They had to remove a built-in bench in order to replace the posts, and they rebuilt it looking better than before! He was upfront with the quote, and the price never changed. The staining/sealing of the deck looks fantastic and even. Throughout, he took the time to explain concerns and plans in clear, frank language and responded to questions with patience and friendliness. I was ready for this repair to be a real headache, but with Jason and his team it went smoothly and beautifully."

"Very quick to respond to posting and came next day for estimate. This was a small repair job on fascia and flashing which they handled at time of estimate for a reasonable price, especially considering the minimum fees that bigger contractors charge -- if you can even get the bigger guys to come out. Contractor (Eric) seemed knowledgeable and was polite and professional. Would hire again."

"We had an eleven year old cedar deck that needed sanding and restaining as well as replacing some rotting boards. We received several estimates for the work and Minquiz Construction came in with a quote that was very reasonable. We are so glad we chose them to do the job. Angel is a craftsman. Our deck stairs had an interesting design and Angel replicated that design and it actually looks better than it did originally. He ended up having to put several coats of stain on the base and he worked on it until it was perfect. We would definitely use Minquiz again."

"I highly recommend M3 Construction Company. Memo (the owner) and Kenny did a great job repairing various large and small drywall holes in our home (most a result of prior plumbing repairs). They also installed an access panel and a grab bar in the bathroom. Both Memo and Kenny were professional, polite, and did excellent work. I would hire them again without hesitation."

"I cannot say enough good things about Abraham and his team. They were indispensible during a challenging and stressful move. Not only did they do a superb job of installing a ceiling fan to an 18ft ceiling, multiple patch repairs, seamlessly replacing and installing bathroom extractor fans that into non standard sized spaces, filling countless nail holes and repainting, and reattaching a dislodged dishwasher, Abraham did all of this amidst the chaos of a move and made MULTIPLE trips to Home Depot to color match paints when I provided the wrong cans. He was patient, thorough, and went WAY above and beyond any expectations in both service, execution, and generosity. If you have anything you need done in your home, make these guys your first call!"

Customers say: True professional

"GF framed a four story gut-rehab that I was the Project Manager for in Lincoln Park. They also added a four story back addition, installed all new Marvin windows, 7 skylights and all of the custom trim and molding throughout. They are technically precise and skilled builders. I continue to have them do other projects as they arise. I highly recommend their workmanship."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, it is possible to build a small, basic deck for $5,000, particularly if you use less expensive materials and a simple design. To stay within this budget, consider a size under 10x12 feet and use affordable materials like pressure-treated wood or cedar. While the general cost for deck building ranges from $4,350 to $12,560, with an average around $8,200, some projects can be completed for as little as $4,350. You can also save on labor costs by doing the work yourself, but be aware that mistakes could end up costing more than hiring a professional. A contractor may have a higher upfront cost, but they can ensure a safe, stable deck that will last.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

How long it takes to install composite decking depends on the size of the decking material, the skills of the person installing the deck, the number of people helping, and how much prep work needs to be done before you can begin. Generally speaking, it takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks to build a composite deck.

While you can use various materials like sand or even just soil, gravel is widely considered the best option to put under a deck. It provides excellent drainage and is resistant to water, fire, and pests. Gravel also helps anchor the soil to prevent erosion during heavy rain and acts as a built-in weed blocker, reducing regular upkeep. Furthermore, it is simple to spread, available in various textures and tones, and adds a polished look that complements any deck design.

A deck doesn’t have to be perfectly level. Many pros even recommend a gentle slope to ensure proper drainage and increase longevity. The ideal gentle slope is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the property, leading water away from the home to prevent pooling and reduce the risk of damage. It also minimizes rot, mold, and other moisture-related problems.
