"Daniel from Imperial Electric did an excellent job for us. We had a relatively small issue that he rectified for us very quickly and then did a very thorough inspection of our entire house at our request. He made a number of recommendations to upgrade our old electrical system that were practical, reasonable and in line with current codes."

"Customer Service is excellent! They gave me a $50 discount from the quote and before the work. But they ended up drilling a wrong hole in the ceiling and I ended up fixing it. Oh well, I just let it go. Should I recommend them, I don't know."

"John was a pleasure to work with! He helped me with all of my electrical needs from installing a two-story foyer light (I had a couple of electricians turn down the job before due to the ladder needed) to a timer for my outside lights to even fixing a chain that broke off a ceiling fan. He truly has the attitude that no job is too big or small. I will use him for all of my electrical needs from now on!"

"Stan came in I explained the problem. He looked at the socket and said it needed replaced. He replaced the socket and the light still works ok. He said it was because of the light bulb. The light bulb is working the same with the new socket as the old one. I felt the price was a little high. It was $75.00 to replace the socket. Since it was a small job I thought I wouldn't be charged as much. He was coming downtown anyway to do another job."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Most ceiling fans have a lifespan of anywhere from five to 15 years or 10 years on average. Just how long your ceiling fan lasts depends on the quality of the parts, how much it’s used, and how well you maintain it. A fan with a weak motor that runs on the medium setting nonstop is likely to have a shorter lifespan compared to a fan with a powerful motor that runs on the slowest setting for air circulation.

Fan power is measured by CFM, or cubic feet per minute. For every 1,000 feet of square footage in your attic, you need a minimum of 700 CFM. Steeper roofs may need larger fans or about 840 CFM.  You can figure the size of attic fan you need by multiplying the square footage of your attic floor by 0.7. (multiply by 1.2 for a steep roof and 1.15 for a dark roof). That number is the CFM required for your fan to run efficiently.

If you’re replacing an old fixture with a ceiling fan, you usually won’t need a permit, but if your electrician runs new wiring for the fixture, you likely will need a permit. Building permits are necessary in most municipalities if you’re making changes to your electrical system, so even if you have partial wiring run to the area and need new wiring installed for added functionality, you’ll probably need a permit. Your electrician should be able to let you know if you need one, and they’ll typically file the paperwork for you.

If your home already has wires for a ceiling fan (and optional light kit), then it’s quite safe to wire and install it yourself. Always be very careful to shut off the power before you begin, and confirm that the power is safely off with a non-contact voltage tester before touching anything. It’s also highly recommended to use eye protection, rubberized gloves, and tools with rubber handles to keep yourself safe from electric shock.

For a 12x12 room, a fan between 36" and 50" will work, as it falls in the range for spaces up to 144 square feet. These size fans provide adequate air circulation and ensure a comfortable environment without being overpowering. Even better, they come in a broad range of styles, offering aesthetics and functionality, making them suitable choices for maintaining an ideal room temperature and enhancing overall comfort.
