"My wife and I decided to replace our dilapidated one-car garage with a modern two-car garage. We chose to work with Coach House Garages and could not be happier with our garage and our customer service experience! Having never been involved in a construction project before, the idea of building a new garage was intimidating. We found Coach House Garages here on Angie’s List and contacted them to get a little information. We soon met with Jeff Grummer and after that meeting, we knew we found our builder. We could not have asked for a better partner to work with than Jeff. He was extremely knowledgable, accessible, never pushy and was quite patient (as we had a lot of questions and no understanding of process or timelines). Jeff guided us through the inevitable ebbs and flows, from variances and permits to tear down and construction. When we hit a couple challenges, Jeff helped us navigate the issues and keep the job on track. We were...and are...impressed with the quality of our new garage and the professionalism of Jeff and the entire Coach House Garage team. We would highly recommend them to anyone considering building a new garage."

"Jim and his team were great to work with. I needed a garage and a driveway but I was on a tight budget and had never done a construction project like this before. Garage Elements did a fantastic job helping me understand the options, what each item would cost so I could pick and choose what I wanted while staying on budget. Really appreciated the great communication throughout the project and Garage Elements commitment to insuring I was happy with the final product. Would highly recommend them!"

"I didn't expect to have to write this. Even waited a few weeks after the work was "completed" in order to live with the results a bit, but here goes. I had Kitchen and Bath Specialties (Joe Laverdiere ) come to my home to redo my bathroom. They were to replace the drywall, put in a tiled walk in shower where I once had a tub, etc. I assumed it would be a right hand drain since the tub had a right drain. Here are some issues I faced with this company. I came home from work to find they had cut out the concrete (house is on a slab) to put in a center drain instead. That's not the bad part. When he went to get the shower pan, they didn't have a center drain, so he ended up doing the right hand like he should have in the first place! I have no idea how they repaired the concrete under the pan, since that pan was put in while I was at work. The tiles in the shower have some even grouting, but in other places the grout is uneven as the tiles weren't cut quite right. He told me the sanded grout did not need to be sealed, but all articles I have read recommend sealing, so I have done that since they left. The air conditioning/heating vent on the wall is white. It had white screws in it. They took it down to work, and when they put it back up, they used black screws. I have no idea where the white ones went. Not only that, but they put it back up and tried to paint around it, so I had to clean grey paint off the white vent and I had to go buy white screws to put it back properly. I showed him one day where I wanted the grab bar to be placed. He even put some pieces of tape on the wall to remind him where to put it. Guess what? Next day I get home and it's not placed correctly. Of course now there are holes in the tiles, so to redo it would mean replacing the tiles too, so I let it go. Even though it was new drywall, they did not paint behind the vanity. Nor did they paint behind the stool, except for the wall showing below the tank. Since the vanity and stool had to be removed to replace the drywall, the new drywall should have been painted. There was also paint all over the toilet tank lid. I pointed out where the drywall joints were not smooth in a number of places. Joe said once I hung towels on the towel bar that would not be noticeable and that the joint where the wall and ceiling meet over the sink was noticeable because of the type of paint I chose (eggshell) and because the light fixture was facing upward. I told him if it was done correctly there would be nothing to hide or notice. They did work on those two spots, but other places are not smooth. They broke both light bulbs in the fixture but failed to mention it to me. I went to replace them because one bulb burnt out and nearly cut my hand in the process. Now let's talk about cleaning up after themselves. My front and back door had lots of hand prints on them. Ever hear of a door knob? There were spots of some white substance on the concrete on the patio they never cleaned up, but they said it would wash away when it rained. We've had a couple of good rains since and they are still there. There are bits of some adhesive on my carpet that I can't get out. I may have to "trim" it. I asked him to paint the inside of the bathroom door the same color as the trim, a very light grey. Nope. I think all he put on there was white primer. One day I was out mowing the yard when Joe left. I went inside when I was finished mowing and found the bathroom light on, the bedroom light on, the hallway light on and even though the air conditioning was on, the front door was standing open. Another day I noticed the side door to the garage was on so I went out to close it. Not only was the door open but the light in the garage was on too. Walking back to the house I see the outside spigot is dripping water. Seriously? So to sum up, the drywall job was not finished smoothly in all the joints. The painting is not even in some places. They did not wipe down all the dust from sanding before beginning to paint, so I will have to redo. I had to seal the grout and clean the tiles and the tile spacing is uneven. It really sucked the joy out of having the room redone."

"Our house had a water damage that ruined much of the drywall and floor on the first floor and the basement. For such a big repair job, I carefully looked up the reviews and recommendations from Angie's list and talked to 3 contractors that have the highest ratings. AOM was one of the three. David, the owner of AOM, quickly came to our house, assessed the damage, explained to me what need to be done, showed great empathy to our loss and current situation (having to stay in hotel waiting to go back to our house), and put a very competitive bid (about 2/3 the bid of another contractor). We picked them and signed the contract. AOM uses Trello, a cloud-based project tracking system that software companies often use, to effectively and promptly communicate task description and updates to all workers and house owners. AOM workers are professional, hard working, and friendly. For such a big project, expectedly there were some hiccups and AOM had to juggle ours with their other on-going projects. David kindly explained to me various aspects of the repair work and promptly fixed any faults that we identified. I became to completely trust David's professional skill and that he would treat our house like his. Several nights and weekends David came to work late so that we could move back to normal life as soon as possible. In the end, we are very happy with our remodeled house. I sincerely recommend David and AOM for any house remodeling and restoration job."

"Following a tornado, I needed to replace the roof, siding, soffits, fascia wrap, and gutters on both my house and my garage. Because this work was being done, we also decided to add new replacement windows. John from Elite Seamless Gutters worked with my insurance adjuster to make sure that my claim was complete and that all of the damage due to the tornado was being covered. His work with the adjuster caused my insurance company to increase the loss payout by 33%. I also know that my job was going to be done with quality materials that are more durable and will last longer than what my insurance company had specified. For instance, .044 vinyl siding rather than .040 siding. A more durable roofing shingle than what my insurance had specified. Other companies I had interview were more than happy to put on the lesser quality, insurance suggested product for the same money. John took the time to make sure that the job would be done right and that it would last. When John's crew was finally able to begin working on my house, his roofing crew of Billy, Darrell and Rupert did a wonderful job of stripping, repairing the unforeseen damage to the decking and covering my roof. At all times they kept my roof protected even when threatened by rain. They even took time to remove a brick chimney for me and cover over the opening before roofing. After the roof was completed, two other men of John's crew, Steve and Brian began to work on the remainder of the exterior of my house. They treated my house as if it was their own. Both Steve and Brian are assets to Elite's reputation. Their attention to detail and hard work shows. The numerous little things that Steve did to ensure that the job is done neatly and correctly go above and beyond what I have seen with other renovation companies. Every day, following their day of work, they would take care to clean up their job site making sure that my residence didn't look like a dump even though we were in the middle of a renovation. Following the completion of work, the job site was entirely cleaned and my house looks great!"

Garages questions, answered by experts

Most garage door rails are fitted for their garage door, in particular. Some manufacturers make adjustable rails, but they’re not universal.

Garage door sensors work by using infrared beams to detect objects in the door’s path. One sensor sends a beam while the other receives it. When the beam is broken—say, by your car or anything else—the sensors signal the door to stop or reverse. It’s all about safety and making sure nothing gets trapped under the door. If they’re misaligned, the beam doesn’t connect, and the garage door might stay open or close regardless of obstructions.

You don’t need a garage door opener unless you need or desire the convenience they offer. While you may be able to open some garage doors manually, having a garage door opener makes life a lot easier. There is an exception, though—a motorized opener is an absolute must if you have a two-car garage (or larger), as the door will be too heavy for the average person to lift on their own.

How often you clean your garage depends on what you do in there and its overall level of disarray. You should clean the garage once every season, though some experts say every month. Decluttering and deep-cleaning once a year is enough for garages used primarily for storage, but if you do car maintenance or other hands-on project in the space, you’ll need to clean more frequently.

In most cases, you do not need planning permission to change a garage door to a normal door, unless a specific restriction is present on your home’s deed. If you’re changing the door because you are trying to convert the garage into a living space, you will need to work with building control for proper signoffs to ensure your conversion meets all of the necessary construction standards.
